Review
`One of these stories is as short as a fleeting thought, another seeks to explain God's gift to man of four score years and ten...In stories as short as these, the love between parent and child, siblings, friends and within communities is a melody, and the point at which the reader shares this intimacy is the unique note. A book to think about for the 9-plus reader.' The School Librarian

A small parcel travels halfway across the world, reaching a desk on a Pacific island where it waits for someone to return. Part One: Nobody on the islands could say they saw him arrive, or when, and, afterwards, none of them could say they saw him go either, and that’s what made the chief of police pretty fed up during his investigation. Mid 1970s: A young pakeha – white man – with a burdened past appears on Tonga. The wayfarer’s sojourn in the region sees him joining the crew on a shark-fishing boat; he faces situations that challenge his past and his hidden talents; he falls in love; a sea pinnacle off the coast captivates him, until that fateful day… Part Two: The author visits the Himalaya of Nepal several times between 1992 and 2008; he learns of some apparently unrelated and unresolved events that occurred over two decades previously, and encounters some intriguing people, including the enigmatic storyteller, Cullen. Part Three: Cullen relates his story of a private Himalayan expedition, the events leading up to it, its dramatic culmination and the repercussions. Exactly who the wandering pakeha and Cullen are remains a question, though discerning readers might link the fleeting clues that sprinkle the book, and reach their conclusions. ….Then the small parcel is opened. “This very human true-life drama weaves a story of adventure, love and tragedy, and the author toys with and marries these elements in his tantalising style.” - Vanessa Finaughty

A magical mystery tour!
By Barry Bousfield
A must read, can't put down: delightful, cleverly crafted, weaved and sutured story; told by a many talented veterinary surgeon who can write, that is for sure! Just like an unforgettable wine, the South Pacific or the Himalayas, it will linger, with you, mysteriously, for a long time. Who is 'Teemu Cullen' then? Could it be T.T.C?

I absolutely love this book!
By Gerald D
This book got me through architectural school. Hand renderings were never my strong point until I got this book. My rendering skills went up considerably (along with my confidence and grades) and I still reference this book today in my professional career. The book gives great examples and the tips from the professionals are very informative. This is definately one of the best books on how to make professional looking presentations.

Wonderful rendering tips!
By DeeDee Brown
This book was very helpful in showing me different rendering techniques used by varying artists. From minimalist, neutral shading to full blown, vibrant color renderings, this book covered them all.

Great tips on which marker colors to use to achieve a particular 'look'...such as glass, metal, wood, etc.

Highly recommend.

Disappointingly light on actual instruction--a poor choice for students
By DianaKC
I was very disappointed in the content of this book. Fully half of this (quite thin) book is taken up with profiles of professional renderers, showing examples of their work with brief comments about what they did to create a drawing--nothing instructional, just general remarks on the finished product. The remainder is the "problem-solving" promised by the title, but there's just so little there--a few techniques, each given a page or two with little or no step-by-step instruction, and nothing to connect the disparate "problems" together. The overall feeling is of a book that's been padded out with artist bios to make up for the scantiness of the "problem solving" material.

I'm not sure who the audience for this book is--obviously some people like it, since it has some good reviews. For me, as an interior design student wanting to learn techniques for marker rendering, it was not useful. I felt it was a poor value and priced very out of line with the quantity and quality of the content.

For interior design and architecture students who need instruction in rendering, a much better value and more comprehensive instruction can be found in the book "Color Drawing: Design Drawing Skills and Techniques for Architects, Landscape Architects, and Interior Designers" by Michael Doyle.

Much more than the cover suggests . . .
By Francis L Fitzpatrick
I'd give this book a "6" if it were an admissible rating. Hopkin loads this book with literally hundreds of both familiar and newly-created instruments that can be made using simple tools. The instructions are step-by-step. The acoustic explanations are interesting and understandable but not required for success.
I recommend Hopkin's book to hobbyists, tinkerers, those who have failed at making instruments on their own; music, art, or classroom teachers; musicians; and I think, most importantly, composers. For composers, new vistas of tone color, sound production, and tonalities appear - through acoustic instruments - no need for electronic synthesis or sampling!

Rodin's Lover: A Novel, by Heather Webb

A mesmerizing tale of art and passion in Belle Époque France

As a woman, aspiring sculptor Camille Claudel has plenty of critics, especially her ultra-traditional mother. But when Auguste Rodin makes Camille his apprentice—and his muse—their passion inspires groundbreaking works. Yet, Camille’s success is overshadowed by her lover’s rising star, and her obsessions cross the line into madness.

Rodin’s Lover brings to life the volatile love affair between one of the era’s greatest artists and a woman entwined in a tragic dilemma she cannot escape.

-Anne Girard, author of Madame Picasso

"A textured historical novel that captures the indomitable spirit of artist Camille Claudel, a woman whose mighty talent was nearly eclipsed by her potent love for fellow artist Auguste Rodin. A story of human emotion, once raw and malleable, now preserved to lasting stone."

Gripping and beautifully written!
By happycapy
You don't have to love historical fiction to love this book. Nor do you have to appreciate sculpture, or care about the politics of public art. You don't even have to be able to find Paris on a map. No, all it takes to love this book is a willingness to lose yourself in a story about a woman whose motto, if she lived now, would've been "Go big or go home."

Camille Claudel (about whom I knew exactly nothing) is a heroine I won't soon forget. Consumed by her drive to create, and inflamed by her love for her tutor, Auguste Rodin, Camille achieves more than any woman sculptor of her time, and pays the price at every level. Passion, heartache, entanglements and betrayal--it's all here.

Webb frames the story beautifully, carrying us into nineteenth century Paris and through the studios, salons and homes of the working artists and their models, benefactors, rivals and families. Her writing is precise (but never arch), assured and utterly convincing. I could feel the clay in Claudel's hand, and the fire in her heart.

Fast-paced and filled with raw emotion, Rodin's Lover is an impressive achievement, and a reminder of the power of great stories about great lives, whenever they were lived.

Exceptionally researched
By Melinda
Webb’s illustration of the complicated and abundantly talented artist Camille Claudel focuses on her tumultuous and licentious affair with Auguste Rodin, a man penetrating her heart yet elusive for her to possess.

Exceptionally researched, Webb highlights the art world in all its glory and harshness. The politics, power and societal propriety seizing artists and their creativity creating a fissure of misunderstanding. A world full of sexism and misogyny as female artists struggle to penetrate a male dominated world, an improper vocation fitting a woman.

Webb provides snippets of Claudel, more could have been offered besides her love of Rodin and their forbidden dalliance. Rodin comes across as weak, a man hopelessly in love with his artistic equal but bound by obligation and duty preventing a full fledged commitment with Claudel.

Despite their runaway attraction, the narrative fails to convey their deep rooted connection, it feels flat, lack of spark. Their mutual appetite for sculpting is also tempered. Two obsessive creatures in both art and love are not expressed as they could be in the narrative, rather a quiet storm leaving the reader anticipating and wanting more declared.

I was hoping Claudel’s slow descent into ‘madness’ was examined more. What drove her to ‘madness’ or was she a victim shut away for convenience sake of her ‘family’ as a maverick, an intelligent independent woman craving more or was art the culprit – much delving left wide open in this area.

An entertaining read, it’s a romance narrative rather than an in depth probe into the woman Camille Claudel. A woman worthy of notice and artistic praise as her life is often questioned in its shroud of mystery and unanswered questions. I was expecting Webb to take a different avenue with Claudel, despite my frustration this is a worthwhile read, if anything the reader will want to discover more of Camille Claudel on their own of her life, art, and tragic circumstances.

Realistic, tender, passionate historical novel in Belle Époque Paris
By Unabridged Chick
Webb's second novel focuses on a less well known figure, French Belle Époque sculptor Camille Claudel, and this novel surpasses her first (which was pretty fabulous!).

Camille is a bit of a savant, a self-taught sculptor with immense talent and a matching ego. Driven to pursue her art, she receives tutoring in Paris from one of France's preeminent sculptors, but her family is split in their support of her passion. Camille's father supports her while her mother rages against the unorthodox behavior of her daughter. While her mother tries to arrange a marriage, Camille is instead drawn to her newest tutor, the much lauded Auguste Rodin.

Lest you fear this is just another hist fic focusing on a lady with a famous lover, let me reassure you this is a far more complicated, rich, and eventful story. Camille is a hard heroine to love: prickly, confident to the point of obnoxious, and single-minded. In Webb's hands, she isn't softened nor does she turn flat the moment she falls into her lover's arms.

In fact, Webb's emotional sensitivity is something I've come to admire in her books as the dramatic events unfold without veering into melodrama. Webb doesn't shy from the hard, heartbreaking parts of Camille's life (I'm being vague about these parts for those unfamiliar with Camille's story, but there's nothing fluffy here!) and intense moments are touched with humor, bittersweet sadness, or irony, making it impossible for this reader to shake Camille's story.

I sometimes find books about artists tricky; it can be hard to render into compelling narrative endeavors that depend on other senses. But Webb managed to evoke the tactile experience of sculpting as well as describing the various sculptures and pieces of art without sounding like a text book. I "saw" the works even without having to google them (although google I did!). I have to give a particular shout out to Joshua DeLillo, who sketched three of Camille's works for use in this novel. They look like photographs, they're so finely rendered, and were a welcome addition to the story.

This is the second novel I read since having my baby (and the second for 2015), and it was a knockout -- well worth stealing time to read. It's a fabulous read for those who enjoy biographical novels; I'm particularly reminded of Melanie Benjamin, who I also think takes shocking, notorious lives and renders them realistically, tenderly, and with empathy. Enjoy this one with espresso or cocoa over a snowy weekend.

Bravo Two Zero - 20th Anniversary Edition, by Andy McNab

In January 1991, eight members of the SAS regiment embarked upon a top secret mission that was to infiltrate them deep behind enemy lines. Under the command of Sergeant Andy McNab, they were to sever the underground communication link between Baghdad and north-west Iraq, and to seek and destroy mobile Scud launchers. Their call sign: BRAVO TWO ZERO.

Each man laden with 15 stone of equipment, they patrolled 20km across flat desert to reach their objective. Within days, their location was compromised. After a fierce fire fight, they were forced to escape and evade on foot to the Syrian border. In the desperate action that followed, though stricken by hypothermia and other injuries, the patrol 'went ballistic'. Four men were captured. Three died. Only one escaped. For the survivors, however, the worst ordeals were to come. Delivered to Baghdad, they were tortured with a savagery for which not even their intensive SAS training had prepared them.

Bravo Two Zero is a breathtaking account of Special Forces soldiering: a chronicle of superhuman courage, endurance and dark humour in the face of overwhelming odds.

Their mission: To take out the scuds. Eight went out. Five came back. Their story had been closed in secrecy. Until now. They were British Special Forces, trained to be the best. In January 1991 a squad of eight men went behind the Iraqi lines on a top secret mission. It was called Bravo Two Zero. On command was Sergeant Andy McNab. "They are the true unsung heroes of the war." -- Lt. Col. Steven Turner, American F-15E commander. Dropped into "scud alley" carrying 210-pound packs, McNab and his men found themselves surrounded by Saddam's army. Their radios didn't work. The weather turned cold enough to freeze diesel fuel. And they had been spotted. Their only chance at survival was to fight their way to the Syrian border seventy-five miles to the northwest and swim the Euphrates river to freedom. Eight set out. Five came back. "I'll tell you who destroyed the scuds -- it was the British SAS. They were fabulous." -- John Major, British Prime Minister. This is their story. Filled with no-holds-barred detail about McNab's capture and excruciating torture, it tells of men tested beyond the limits of human endurance... and of the war you didn't see on CNN. Dirty, deadly, and fought outside the rules.

New meaning to the English adage of the "stiff upper lip"
By Christopher Griffen
What an amazing story. Bravo Two Zero tells the tale of a squad of British SAS soldiers on a mission in Iraq during the Gulf War to take out mobile Scud launchers. When I started reading the book, I expected to read about the detailed accounts of how the launchers were wiped out and how Sgt. Andy McNab's team contributed to this effort. I was shocked as a chain of unfortunate events ruined the mission and put McNab's team in great peril. Several of them died and some were captured by Iraqi troops.
Bravo Two Zero is not for the faint of heart. The detailed account of McNab's torture and brutal beatings at the hand of the Iraqis is tough reading. I'm in awe of the fortitude and subtle defiance that he and his men exhibited in the face of such terrible cruelty.
But don't mistake this book for a "prison journal." It's anything but. McNab goes into great detail about how the Scud hunting missions and special forces missions in general are planned and executed. You begin to realize that even the best-laid plans can be subject to failure if minute details are overlooked. As McNab points out however, in a speech he recalls from his regimental commander, the true mettle of a soldier is measured not only by his successes, but by how he performs when all hell has broken loose and the mission seems to be a total failure.
Bravo Two Zero is not only an amazing real-life adventure story, but also a testament to the endurance, determination and courage of the British SAS troops who took part in the Gulf War, playing a crucial role in the defeat of Sadaam Hussein.

Don't be misled...
By Maxwell
Andy McNab has become a bestselling fiction author in the UK. But his first book, Bravo Two Zero, was supposed to be the nonfiction true story of the ill fated mission behind Iraqi lines that he commanded during the Gulf War. But the truth is that McNab was writing fiction from the very beginning! It has been proven that McNab exaggerated and blatantly lied about what happened during the mission. Those looking for a true account of a Special Forces mission should look elsewhere. All McNab does is tell fairytales to turn himself into a pop culture war hero. So many credible sources (including other surviving members of the BTZ patrol) have given reliable testimony that McNab's version of events was false that I find it hard to believe that he has not become a laughing stock to the general public (supposedly he is now regarded with "contempt and ridicule" within the SAS itself).

Basically, McNab took a real event that he was involved in and turned it into a pop culture Rambo fantasy of what an SAS mission is like. His lies and misrepresentations are so numerous that its embarassing. The squad's mission was NOT to hunt down and attack mobile SCUD launchers and destroy an all-important fibre optic communications line. Their mission was to man an observation post and report any significant activity on an Iraqi Main Supply Route. As for the SCUDs, they were to report any sightings of the mobile launchers so that those targets could be marked for airstrikes (not to attack the launchers themselves). This stuff may not sound as action-esque and sexy as the mission McNab describes, but it makes a lot more sense, and it is the way a small spec ops patrol alone behind enemy lines would really operate.

The patrol did NOT charge into an entire platoon of Iraqis, driving off or killing all of them and blowing up their Armored Personnel Carriers. When they were discovered by enemy forces, they actually did the smart thing and immediately broke contact and ran away into the desert, going into "escape and evasion" mode. Although they did return some fire to cover their retreat, they certainly did not kill any significant number of enemy troops let alone blow up any APCs.

Later, after the remaining members of McNab's group hijacked a taxicab in order to drive across the border to Syria, they did not assault a vehicle checkpoint and lay massive damage on the enemy troops garrisoned there. Again, they actually did the smart thing by getting out of the car before reaching the checkpoint and attempting to bypass the checkpoint covertly on foot. At this point their sole objective was to reach Syria and escape to safety. They were certainly not about to start any unnecessary fights to get themselves killed. McNab claims in his book that according to intel reports, the squad inflicted 250 casualties on the enemy throughout their ordeal. This is complete nonsense, as according to the official statements given to the SAS command during debriefing, there were no more than several confirmed kills mentioned. McNab has never bothered to produce the alleged "intelligence report" to confirm the statements in his book. Fellow surviving members of the mission have even testified in court that McNab lied about some of the more extreme instances of torture he described in his book. According to one of the men who was with him in captivity, instances in mcNab's book where he describes getting his tooth pulled out with pliers and having a burning hot spoon placed on his tongue never happened.

If you are looking for a more credible firsthand account of what happened during the mission, pick up "Soldier Five" by Mike Coburn. Coburn was with McNab during the mission and he gives an honest and rational view on what happened. His version does not support McNab's. He does not sensationalize the mission, nor does he glorify himself or his teammates. He surely doesn't even imply that the patrol had any significant number of confirmed kills, let alone 250. He himself never mentions personally witnessing or inflicting any confirmed kills at all. I'm sure that the team must have inflicted some degree of casualties but there is no way to be certain of the amount, and the fact remains that the actual number of confirmed kills were few. When compared with the reliable facts surrounding the mission, Coburn's account holds up but McNab's falls apart.

What the Bravo Two Zero business shows is that although Special forces soldiers have a very admirable and elite profession, they are not superhuman Rambos capable of taking out armies by themselves. They are only human. And just like in any group of humans, you will find dirtbags and opportunists among them. Andy McNab is one such opportunist. With his shamelessness, he has deceived the public and distorted the true nature of Special operations and modern warfare. He wanted fame and fortune. In order to get it he gave the public just the type of fantastic hero story they wanted to believe, rather than giving them a true insight into his real experiences that they could learn from. He and those like him are a disgrace to their proud profession. Don't buy his books, and don't let yourself be misled.

This is why the SAS are the best in the business.
By A Customer
This book is the true story of operation gone horribly wrong during the Gulf War. An eight-man team of the elite British Special Air Service were dropped by helicopter into the desert of western Iraq, each carrying well over 200 lbs. of equipment. Their mission was to watch a road for military traffic and hunt for mobile Iraqi SCUD missile launchers. They were soon discovered by a local shepherd boy. The local Iraqi militia were called out, and the poop hit the fan.
Their radios didn't work, and so they had no way to call for an extraction. They decided to trek 100 miles west to the Syrian border. But one man had injured his leg during the evasion of the Iraqi forces. Another had been wearing his thermal underwear since the compromise, and so had sweating profusely the entire time and was now dangerously dehydrated. How any managed to survive is a true testament to the power of the human will, and to the rigorous standards to which the SAS trains its men.
The overall book is excellent. McNab has put together one of the most readable military stories I've ever come across. It's a cliche, but this book is a real page-turner. There's military jargon galore, but he usually explains it for the layman reader. A glossary at the back helps with that, and with some of the British army slang, but the regular British stuff you have to figure out by context.
It's the little things McNab adds that make this book so readable and "enjoyable," (if you can use that word about a book in which a man describes himself and his friends being tortured, and some dying gruesome deaths.) To a military professional, the tactics and gear of the SAS are an interesting part of the book. [To my grunt bubbas, make sure to check out the pictures of the packs and gear they carried.] But even the average person can find things to identify with in the book: The joking between the members of the patrol, even after they've been discovered; The story about the old Iraqi farmer who they run into while escaping. There are others, but I won't spoil the entire book for you.
This is one of the most no-holds-barred looks at warfare I've ever read. The only book I can compare it to, for realism and readability purposes, is "Nam" by Mark Baker. If you enjoy military books, or true stories of adventure and survival against all odds, you'll like this book.
BTW, if you already read this book, McNab's account of his life before the Gulf War, "Immediate Action," would be well worth your time also. I've also heard the BBC (or some British TV station) did an excellent movie version of this story, starring Sean Bean ("Sharpe" movies, "GoldenEye,") as McNab. I haven't seen it, but that'd probably be worth checking out, too.
