Funniest of the Quick Reads Short Stories

Men at Work is definitely the most entertaining of all the books in the Quick Reads Series. The story I think works so well because the main character Ian Greening, is such a likeable character, as his girlfriend who he clearly cares a lot about. So you do feel for the guy when his unemployed girlfriend gets a job in his workplace, and even though this means the end of independent Ian, he loves her so much he doesn't speak up. But his girlfriend ultimately goes to far in changing Ian's work life and image seen by his colleagues. Ian has to get rid of her, but how?

There's not a lot of humorous reads amongst the Quick Reads short stories series. Trouble on the Heath by Terry Jones is another good one to check out if you're after a fun read. If you're unfamiliar with the Quick Reads series, they are books published to increase literacy levels by encouraging those who don't like to read beyond magazines and comic books to try fiction through cheap priced (these all sell of the rack for under two pounds in the UK) short story length fiction and non fiction. I think Men at Work achieves those goals and those reading this as their first book ever or for a while will definitely be encouraged to try other Quick Reads stories or regular novels.

This is the first story I've come across by Mike Gayle, after reading this great book I'll definitely be checking out his novels.

This book works...

I've struggled for years with drug and alcohol addiction. I was abusing pain killers daily and illegally for about 3 years (OC, LT, Perc, you name it). I have tried several times to quit with no luck. The longest period of sobriety that I've had over this time was 2-3 days. I didnt know how to manage the withdrawl symptoms, or the anxiety and depression that come with trying to get sober. More importantly, I couldnt figure out why I was an addict. Science will tell you that you have a disease, and once you have this diagnosis, you almost feel entitled to continue along your path as an addict. I picked this book up 3 weeks ago today, and I havent touched drugs or alcohol since that very day. Not only that, but I no longer have the cravings that used to DOMINATE my days as an addict. Make no mistake about it. Only God can get you off drugs. You can't, your Dr. cant, and this book can't do it for you. But this book gave me the tools to learn how to switch my addiction from drugs to God. It also helped to explain my situation from a Biblical perspective. If you're an addict, and you're reading this, you need to sit down and understand one simple fact.....YOURE NOT THE FIRST DRUG ADDICT IN HISTORY!!!!! The Bible is full of drunks and sinners. This book helps you see those people in a new light, and see how God worked in their lives as he will in yours. This book enabled me to turn to God to help save my life, my marriage, my job, and my relationship with the Father. This is a MUST READ for a Christian addict.

This is a tough love book. It really came in my life at a time when I needed some true words. The Lord had made it very clear our road together was blocked at that long established idolotrous behavior. I was painfully living outside God's will and did not think I could have a life without getting high on wine as a daily escape. I was wrong! I read this book in July 2010 and began to really take the sin seriously and seeked help after 40 years of denial. Through much upheaval and prophetic words from my Beloved,I took His hand. He told me to "ride on the handlebars. He knew the destination". I had no other choice but to trust and honor Him and oh! what glory and promise He has shown me. Dr. Shaw's advice to "quit for 6 months" motivated me. He emphasized "I would not die"! And I have not. I am ALIVE!
"Greater is the power of the work of the resurrected Christ within us than the power of any sin no matter how long established in our lives." Romans 6:4,5,11
Thank you Dr. Shaw for speaking your revelation for others.My will has been splintered and the freedom is dazzling. I am doing the workbook now with a Christian counselor.

I bought the book for an advanced course in OR.
I believe that the book is nicely put together and has all the material for an beginner to intermediate course in OR. There are better books no doubt.

The book explains the duality theory very nicely.

It uses the tabular form of the Simplex method for LP solving. The Dictionary method is more simple.

If you need to study anything from this book and your prof is not teaching well. Go to YouTube and google Linear Programming. a professor called G. Srinivasan has an amazing set of lectures there. You should be all set after that.

The ruthlessness of the prosecutors and the eagerness of neighbor to testify against neighbor brilliantly illuminate the destructive power of socially sanctioned violence.
 
Written in 1953, The Crucible is a mirror Miller uses to reflect the anti-communist hysteria inspired by Senator Joseph McCarthy's "witch-hunts" in the United States. Within the text itself, Miller contemplates the parallels, writing: "Political opposition...is given an inhumane overlay, which then justifies the abrogation of all normally applied customs of civilized behavior. A political policy is equated with moral right, and opposition to it with diabolical malevolence."

A Moving and Brilliant Play

The play's main narrative line tells the story of the Salem witch hunts which took place in Massachusetts, 1692. At a deeper level, Miller raises several powerful and important questions about human life and morality. But the play's most amazing quality is that it is not "deep" or "philosophical" by traditional standards. Miller has, in a short and easy-to-read manuscript, opened the door (or maybe I should say he presents the reader with a mirror) to modern political life.
The play is essentially a crtique of McCarthyism and the the communist scare of the 1950s. Miller saw the parallels between the witch hunts and the McCarthy trials, and found the witch trials to be a compelling vehicle for discussing modern events. Key themes include:
1. People gaining absolution from the powers-that-be by confessing the sins of others.
2. The power of community rituals, such as confession.
3. The role of political opposition and the consequences of compliance (passive or active).
4. The consequences of a polarized world views and mass hysteria.
These are just a few of the themes. The play is quite clearly a great tragedy, but remains a tragedy for our times. Through characters we can connect with, Miller convincingly shows us that the lessons from the witch hunts still apply. As a reader, I am convinced that Miller's play remains relevant and powerful in the twenty-first century. Miller has left me with questions, regarding world events in 2002 and 2003, that I did not have before reading the play.
I read this play in only a couple hours. It is compelling, engaging, and difficult to put down. Personally, I feel this text stands a great chance of making it onto my "top ten" list of best manuscripts. I highly recommend this play.

Frightening Possibilities

As usual, Arthur Miller was in rare form when he wrote "The Crucilble." Although on the surface it is about the Salem Witch Trials, Miller's true inspiration came from the Red Scare that plagued Hollywood in the middle of the twentieth century (and included his pal Elia Kazan). The fact that Miller wove factual history with the hysteria of his day makes "The Crucible" all the more chilling.

Throughout the course of the play, a collection of teenage girls 'confess' to having seen various women and men of the town of Salem with the devil. This hysteria sweeps over the town as even the authorities fall under the sway of these lying young girls. Caught in the middle of these hysteronics is the Proctor family - John and Elizabeth, who have struggled in the past, but are trying to rebuild their marriage. They are rent apart when Elizabeth is suspected of being a witch. John hopes to clear his wife's name, but only manages to make matters worse for both of them.

The hysteria experienced in Salem is chilling in the fact that these sorts of witch hunts occur today, in all different areas of society. "The Crucible" shows how easily people can be swayed, with the barest of evidence, to believe something that is false. Miller's play is extremely well-written and informative, and almost too frighteningly real.

a great recording

I used this recording this year while teaching "The Crucible". My students loved it!! The emotion conveyed by the cast is SO much better than the typical monotone voice that students use while reading out loud. Even though there were some small parts that are skipped when following along with our textbook, it was completely worth it (and the parts skipped were very small - it was very easy to read it aloud if necessary).

A great book to read if interested in the subject

I went into this book already knowing a lot on the subject of the Philadelphia Experiment and learned even more new info. It has an interesting format and easy to follow. I highly recommend it if you are interested in the subject.

This book totally sucked.

Having wanted to learn about the fascinating subject of the Philadephia Experiment I came to Amazon.com to look for credible books on the subject. Unfortunately, I fell for the suggestion to read this book. The only good news is that it cost less than $5 and wasted only a day of my time reading it. The book is not credible. It's a fairy tale, literally as well as the way the story is told. Save your money and buy something else.

Not what I was expecting

The idea of this book was fascinating for someone who enjoys conspiracy theories. However, it ended up being a complete let down. It was a short read so I didn't have to suffer that long. The plot was ridiculous. Alice was taken into questioning due to the fact she had hacked into government files about the Philadelphia Experiment. We are then taken into flash backs of how Alice had first heard of this theory. The entire book we are told to believe Alice is this super genius when her dialogue says otherwise. Finally, after being given repetitive and pointless information, we are thrown back into the present where she is currently being questioned. What happens? Nothing. Nothing at all.

Oh wait, they let her go, take her home, then offer her a job.

There was no climax, filled with nothing I hadn't already read online, and the characters had no depth. I do not recommend.
