About the Author
Hetty van de Rijt studied Educational Psychology at the University of Nijmegen, the Netherlands and obtained her Ph.D. in Physical Anthropology at the University of Cambridge, England. At the University of Amsterdam, Dr. van de Rijt studied the development of human babies in their home environment. As lead author with her husband as co-author, she wrote the best-selling parenting book The Wonder Weeks, which has been published in twelve languages, from the USA to Japan.
Frans X. Plooij studied behavioral biology in the Netherlands in Amsterdam, Nijmegen, and Groningen, where he received his Ph.D. in 1980. He is a full member of several international, scientific societies including the New York Academy of Sciences. Together they studied infant development in free-living chimpanzees with Dr. Jane Goodall in the Gombe National Park, Tanzania, East Africa. Dr. Plooij is director of the International Research-institute on Infant Studies (IRIS) at Arnhem, and president of Kiddy World Promotions B.V.

This info does not need to be a book.

Some of the information is right on and makes a lot of sense, but the older my baby gets the more off the weeks become. Every child's developmental milestones can be very unique and not on schedule. However, this book gives you a basic understanding of what to expect and when. The negative review is not of the info, but of the way the book is written. If you go to the site you can get all the information you need for free on the weeks and milestones. What this book adds is completely unnecessary and trivial mothers' quotes about their kids and what they went through. It's not educational at all, it's just anecdotal. The book will talk about babies learning that you and they are separate entities, for instance, and then it will start quoting random mothers who went through the separation issues with their babies. And they're not telling you solutions, they're just saying things like: One night Matthew starting screaming every couple hours. I realized that he just missed me and was scared that I wasn't with him. He did that for a couple weeks until he learned that I'm still somewhere near by. - Matthew's mother. This kind of stuff fills 75% of the book and to me is a complete waste of time to read. I'm a new mom, I need clean cut info, I don't have time for empty pages of random mothers' ramblings. I can go to a mommy group for that.

great insights... but just get the app

The information this book provides is very useful for parents curious about their child's development... but also for understanding what on earth s happening to your baby when the stormy periods come. I had the app already and so liked what they wee explaining I bought the book to get more detail... but It wasn't necessary. The app has everything you need on it in a sisynct format and text. The book is just longer; it doesn''t provide significant additional insight.

so, I'm giving it a four for the good info... but advise you to save your money and get the app instead.

Made me feel so much better the day we got it, and helped my husband understand. I felt so validated.

I can't even explain how much this helped day one when we received it. Here's what was going on:

I had heard about this book from a friend when I was pregnant but didn't order it and forgot about it. Then I heard about it again when I overhead two new mom's I knew saying "well he's been so fussy but maybe he's just approaching a Leap" I thought: what's a leap.. they said that like a specific term.. then I remembered this book.

Well I was significantly sleep deprived and baby would not let me out of his site for even a minute. He had been so clingy for the past couple weeks. Also he was sleeping through the night before, but had started getting up every 2-3 hours again like he was a newborn, but this was at nearly 4 months. I told my husband about this book and he encouraged me to order it, if nothing else just so I would know what my friends were all talking about. The day it came in the mail I skipped to the week we were on. 19 weeks. WOW I couldn't believe it. Everything I read was exactly what my baby had been doing~ and I mean seriously exactly. I just kept saying "YES" as I read each paragraph, because that is what we had been going through. I had no idea this was all normal and something all babies went through at this age.

I told my husband and asked him to read the chapter on week 19. He said the same thing that it was everything I'd been telling him our baby had been doing. Such as; I want to wash the dishes, but baby is upset if I break eye contact for even a minute. Well we were fascinated and hooked on this book. If they knew exactly what he was doing, what was going to come out of it and what was going to be his next big leap.

Well we read on, and to our satisfaction he did make that big leap very soon afterward and we have been having a very happy week now with no more fussy baby, now he's all sunshine.

Even if I never read the rest of the book, it felt so good in that moment to have this book clearly explain the things I'd been feeling and seeing was going on. I needed to hear that my baby was not going to be that clingy and demanding forever, and this book explained that he would not, when he would not, and what he would learn from and get out of that week.

About the Author
Stuart McGill, PhD, is a professor at the University of Waterloo in, Ontario, Canada and an internationally recognized lecturer and expert in spine function and injury prevention and rehabilitation. He has written more than 200 scientific publications that address lumbar function, low back injury mechanisms, investigation of tissue loading during rehabilitation programs, and the formulation of work-related injury avoidance strategies. He has received several awards for his work, including the Volvo Bioengineering Award for Low Back Pain Research from Sweden. Dr. McGill has been an invited lecturer at many universities and delivered more than 200 addresses to societies around the world. As a consultant, he has provided expertise on assessment and reduction of the risk of low back injury to government agencies, corporations, professional athletes and teams, and legal firms. He is one of the few scientists who consults and to whom patients are regularly referred.

A 'must read' for everyone who deals with backs

Everyone who deals with backs, either in sports (athletes, coaches, trainers), physicians, therapists, and back pain patients themselves, should read this book. I am a physician who specializes in back disorders and back pain. I have followed Dr. McGill's reseach for many years and it has revolutionized my practice like nothing else. One of my top priorities with back pain patients is to review what exercises they have been given in the past. I invariably stop them from doing several excercises that Dr. McGill's research has proven to be quite harmful for the back. I Substitute the 'big three' excercises that are described in this book, and many of the patients need no further intervention. There is a great deal of misinformation regarding back excercise, and many of the excercise routines used in sports, schools, military, and fitness centers are harmful. That is why this book is so important; not because it gives another fitness guru's opinion, but because it gives good, scientifically based facts on one of the tougher clinical issues from a world renown expert. Thank you Dr. McGill - keep the research coming!

Help for Sufferers of Low Back Pain

This is a superb book that is useful for both clinicians and patients alike. Using methods based on electromyographic measurements published by McGill and his colleagues in many scientific journals, he ascertains which muscles are activated in a variety of exercises. This becomes important for patients who have low back problems and must avoid heavy spine loads both in the fitness center and at work. He lists a variety of commonly prescribed exercises that should be avoided by persons with low back problems: sit ups, pelvic tilts, leg raises, low back extension exercises on machines and hip flexion exercises using the Roman chair. He then recommends a series of exercises that are designed to strengthen back muscles and stabilize the spine while at the same time minimizing spinal compression that could exacerbate back problems: the curl-up, side bridges and "bird dog" leg extensions.

This book should be recommended reading for all physical therapists and strength trainers with clients having low back problems and is a must for those suffering from low back pains.

Comprehensive and Practical Approach to Patient Reactivation

This wonderful text focuses on the all important role of activity, exercise, and fitness in the prevention and treatment of low back disorders. In particular, the clinical publications emerging from Australia and Denmark are reviewed and balanced by scientific investigation of spinal loads with different activities. Professor McGill's book is highly practical and thoroughly evidence-based.
This new book fills a void as a perfect cornerstone to the biopsychosocial model of patient reactivation recommended by international guidelines throughout the world (AHCPR, CSAG, DIHTA). Most significantly, the patient reactivation model being advocated by evidence-based experts today is made more clinically relevant as a result of this thoughtful and practical presentation of the "tools of the trade" for presecribing physiologically sound reactivation approaches. This is the ideal complement to simple reassuring reactivation advice being recommended for acute, uncomplicated low back pain patients and more involved cognitive-behavioral strategies being recommended for complex, chronic patients. It is most relevant for those subacute patients who are at risk of becoming chronically disabled.
McGill highlights the recent scientific evidence which has unmasked the failure of diagnostic imaging to find the "cause" of back pain. He instead points clinicians towards the often ignored literature about the methods available for establishing the patient's functional diagnosis. This section is of great clinical value since most health care providers perform a limited functional assessment of low back pain patients.
Popular concepts such as stability are defined, quantified, and made practical. The author explains how he determines spinal load profiles of routine activities of daily living and common exercises. In turn, many common beliefs about exercise are revealed as based on myth rather than evidence.
For example he exposes the myths of lifting with a straight back, the pelvic tilt, performing sit-ups with bent knees, and the prone superman exercise. Other popular approaches such as the use of back belts or abdominal hollowing are discussed from a functional perspective.
This book is most valuable to practicing clinicians for his elegant presentation of safe back exercises for subacute back pain patients. These simple exercises are shown along with the evidence demonstrating their safety and value. For instance, the cat-camel, quadruped leg reach, side bridge, and trunk curl are shown as biomechanically safe exercises which can be prescribed as a beginner program for most low back pain patients. Hopefully, randomized, controlled clinical trials will soon follow to further validate such exercises in patient populations.
Many sufferers of low back pain are engaged in ardous sport or occupational activities. The book concludes with a section on more advanced exercises that have preventive and conditioning value, although would be inappropriate for the subacute treatment phase. This is once again invaluable information for practicing clinicians which can help steer patients away from chronic pain, disability, treatment dependency, overmedication, deconditioning, fear-avoidance behavior, and unncessary surgery. Pr. McGill is to be applauded for this utterly brilliant and practical patient information presented in such a humble, small package.

Red Velvet Lovers UNITE!!! 10 stars

Let me start by saying OMG! I LOVED this cookbook! It simply blew me away. First – you have to LOVE red velvet to love this cookbook (obviously) and second – you need to NOT be worried about red food coloring! Ha! ;)

This book blew me away with its recipes, photographs and red velvet transformations! Every single recipe is red velvet “enhanced” and let me say – done beautifully!

The book is divided into eight categories – The Basics, Quick Breads and Breakfast Treats, Cakes and Cupcakes, Cookies, Brownies and Bars, Breads, Ice Cream and Frozen Dessert and Other Indulgences. I have several favorites from each section. I actually think there are only four or five recipes that I don’t have marked… and those will probably sound good tomorrow! ;)

I may actually start and just bake my way through the book. (I was just talking about “baking / cooking though a cookbook” in The Cookbook Junkies Facebook group – and not that many people have actually done it…) Anyways some of my favorite recipes are…

“The Ultimate Red Velvet Cake” (page 11 – and believe me – it is THE ultimate!), “Boiled Frosting” (page 16 – which reminds me of an old recipe my Grandma Barbra used to make), “White Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting” (page 17 – and my FAVORITE!), “Glazed Fried Donuts” (page 22), “Red Velvet Waffles” (page 28), “Breakfast Biscuits with Chocolate Gravy” (page 36), “Red Velvet Cheesecake” (page 42), “Icebox Cake” (page 50), “Molten Lava Cakes” (page 53), “Red Velvet Snowballs” (page 58), “Gooey Butter Cookies” (page 62), “Cream Cheese Thumbprints” (page 71), “Seven-Layer Bars” (page 82), “Red Velvet Bread” (page 87 – YES! Bread!), “Frozen Cheesecake Pie” (page 100), “Red Velvet Truffles” (page 106), “Red Velvet Éclairs” (page 110) and “Red Velvet ‘Twinkies’” (page 120 – which would be incredible deep fried and drizzled in white chocolate…)

All in all – this cookbook will be having a permanent place in my stack of “favorite cookbooks”! I can’t express how much I love this cookbook – and yes – I’m obsessed with anything red velvet. I’m not really sure where the love came from – perhaps from (much like the author of this cookbook) from the movie “Steel Magnolia’s” which I seen when I was younger – huge Dolly Parton fan!

I highly recommend this cookbook to all of my fellow RED VELVET LOVERS!

I was so excited when this book arrived! My family loves all things red velvet and this book does not disappoint! There are so many creative recipes in here that I never would have thought to try. The red velvet biscuits with chocolate gravy are AMAZING and I can't wait to try the donuts.

Not My Favorite Cookbook

I am basing my review of RED VELVET LOVER’S COOKBOOK on one recipe, Red Velvet Bundt Cake. I just baked it. It is a far cry from what I want in anything red velvet. I baked it in a rose bundt pan so it came out perfect and beautiful. But the good times stop there. I have baked dozens of bundt and pound cakes over the years so it must be the recipe and not the baker.. The icing, always an important element of anything red velvet, should at the very least be doubled. The cake was dry and pretty much tasteless when just out of the oven although it got a little tastier in a day or so but not much. I substituted White Lily flour, since some Red Velvet wizards say that we must always use that brand since it should produce a softer cake. (I always use White Lily when I am baking the real thing.) I increased the eggs from three to four in an effort to make the cake moister to no avail. I then checked out a red velvet bundt cake on the internet that looks promising. It has three cups sugar (this one has only 2 1/3 cups) and 6 eggs and 3 to 4 tablespoons of cocoa powder. and uses vegetable oil instead of butter, and a little vinegar I suspect that would make a much tastier cake than this recipe. Finally although the author lists vanilla flavor in the ingredients for the cake, she does not tell you when and where to add the vanilla so you are on your own here. That of course is the least of things wrong with the recipe.

On the positive side, the cookbook certainly is well laid out and must have every red velvet recipe imaginable. The exact number, according to the book cover, is over 50. They are as exotic as red velvet cheesecake, red velvet donuts, red velvet eclairs and red velvet breakfast biscuits with chocolate gravy. The photographs of the finished desserts are beautiful. We can hope that this bundt cake recipe is the only bad apple in the basket. I have found bakers of red velvet cakes often to be as vain about having the definitive recipe for this much-loved dessert—and may not be willing to share the recipe-- as are cooks with their recipes for fried chicken or barbecue sauce. Given my unpleasant experience with this recipe and since I have a recipe for red velvet cake that has proven to be a winner and markedly different from the one the author provides, I am not inclined to try her recipe or any other recipe from the collection for that matter.

Some Exercises Seem Helpful - BUT USE WITH CAUTION!!!

I think there is something to the techniques described in this book. I've been using them for just over one month. However, I would caution against many of the more agressive techniques promoted. In particular, the "eye rolling" and "clock rotations". These two methods seem to put stress on the retina and I would not recommend them. I began to see an increase in the amount of floaters in my eyes, which straining the retina can do. I would suggest streching the out eye muscles only within your useful visible range and not trying to roll your eyes at all. You can get the same effect with a more careful approach. I only share this out of concern that people might damage one of their most valuable assets - their eyes. I think the Pumping exercise is especially helpful to my vision and incorporates what you normally would use your eyes for.

Be careful of which reviews you believe

I'm sorry to say that this didn't work for me. I did the exercises for about 6 months. I was so excited because I self diagnosed my own eyes using eye charts and measuring how far I could see until things became blurry and I really felt like I made a lot of progress. I used to be only able to see 3 inches away. Now I can see 4 inches away from my face. Yesterday I was excited to go to the optometrist so I could get evidence of my improvement. Without even looking at my previous prescription (it was a new optometrist), we did the eye test and she handed me a prescription that was exactly the same as the one I had 6 months ago. Needless to say, I was disillusioned. I wish this worked for me and I have no idea why it worked for the people in those video testimonials, but I learned that there is a psychological factor behind diagnosing yourself and I would recommend only heeding reviews that saw an improvement after having actual checkups with an optometrist.

Has helped my vision when diligent with the exercises

I enjoy simple and easy remedies to issues, and this book is one of them for me.

As with anything that usually is beneficial, the best way to get results is with regularity. Whether or not the exercises will need to be a lifelong practice is still to be determined. But what I have observed, with the time I used some of the exercises that I found beneficial, I can have vision improvements immediately afterwards.

I basically went through all of the exercises and then determined which ones seemed to work best. So those were the ones I continued doing. It did not take but a few repetitions for each -- nothing strenuous. One of the basic results for me was clarity with seeing smaller type in the distance or images without squinting. And also, seeing small type with books at a normal distance without squinting. I have come to notice that one eye is better with close up and the other eye with distance -- which makes for an unusual viewing combination at times. However, I get more cooperative vision instead of opposing vision with the exercises.

It also helped my mom who dish washing soap issue that now resembles macular degeneration (as far as optometrist are concerned). Although there was not problem with her vision until an undiluted soap bubble popped into her eye as she was pouring soap into the dishwater. It has appeared to resemble more of a trauma to the eye, and has improved gradually over the years, but is not completely remedied.

I wondered if this could help her vision since now she was also using her other eye more strenuously to compensate for the injured one. So I took her through some of the exercises. Near the end of the book is a series of lines of type in a variety of sizes from large to micro (really small). They do not repeat the lines of type, so that they cannot be anticipated. I had found that I could read the smallest line after the exercises and without it, I stopped somewhere well before that size -- so it was one of the tests of whether the exercises were helpful for me.

I took her from the point at what she would think was too small to read (about 1/3 of the page to the end). She would read a line and was surprised because automatically she would have thought by the size, it would not be readable normally. She read it. I kept saying, "Try the next one," and on and on until she had completed the entire list. The last two lines she missed a word in each but otherwise, she read through the entire list.

The exercises have been helpful and I will work at becoming more diligent with doing them to see if they can have a prolonged effect, or if it is another routine to continue.

One of the best things about the exercises, is that they can be done easily while standing in line at a store, sitting at home, relaxing. As long as there are signs or items with words that can be read at a distance it can be used for exercise. One just takes moving the eyes center focus to outward as if moving around a clock, and the other is similar to what people used to do with moving the finger away from the eyes and bringing it close until focus is lost.

These are some of simple exercises that have helped me achieve better vision results. If an exercise made my eyes feel strained or left me dizzy, then these are not the ones I use.

This book is awesome. It has detailed charts and explenations of most every scale you would need as well as all the major/minor and power chords. This book has exploded my playing, and I'm now gaining a better understanding of playing bass lines off the cuff in various keys. I would recomend this book for the beginner or the old pro. Add this to your library and keep on rockin'!!
