Easy to follow and full of useful information!

The pictures and the diagrams are really nice in this textbook. The layout is also nice and easy to follow. There is a ton of information so pair it with the study guide and you'll be able to do great! I got the loose leaf version so it was easier for me to carry a few chapters around at a time rather than the whole thing.

A Suitable Boy: A Novel (Modern Classics), by Vikram Seth

Vikram Seth's novel is, at its core, a love story: Lata and her mother, Mrs. Rupa Mehra, are both trying to find -- through love or through exacting maternal appraisal -- a suitable boy for Lata to marry. Set in the early 1950s, in an India newly independent and struggling through a time of crisis, A Suitable Boy takes us into the richly imagined world of four large extended families and spins a compulsively readable tale of their lives and loves. A sweeping panoramic portrait of a complex, multiethnic society in flux, A Suitable Boy remains the story of ordinary people caught up in a web of love and ambition, humor and sadness, prejudice and reconciliation, the most delicate social etiquette and the most appalling violence.

From Publishers Weekly
Seth previously made a splash with his 1986 novel in verse, The Golden Gate . Here he abandons the compression of poetry to produce an enormous novel that will enthrall most readers; those who are fazed by a marathon read, however, may gasp for mercy. Set in the post-colonial India of the 1950s, this sprawling saga involves four families--the Mehras, the Kapoors, the Chatterjis and the Khans--whose domestic crises illuminate the historical and social events of the era. Like an old-fashioned soap opera (or a Bombay talkie), the multi-charactered plot pits mothers against daughters, fathers against sons, Hindus against Muslims and small farmers against greedy landowners facing government-ordered dispossession. The story revolves around independent-minded Lata Mehra: Will she defy the stern order of her widowed upper-caste Hindu mother by marrying the Muslim youth she loves? The search for Lata's husband expands into a richly detailed and exotically vivid narrative that crisscrosses the fabric of India. Seth's panoramic scenes take the reader into law courts, religious processions, bloody riots, academia--even the shoe trade. Portraits of actual figures are incisive; the cameo of Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, for example, captures his high-minded, well-meaning indecision. Seth's point of view is both wry and affectionate, and his voluble, palpably atmospheric narrative teems with chaotic, irrepressible life. 100,000 first printing; $200,000 ad/promo; BOMC main selection; QPB alternate; author tour.

From Library Journal
Opening and closing with a wedding, this novel is ostensibly the story of a Hindu family trying to find a suitable husband for their younger daughter, Lata. Who will the suitable boy turn out to be? The dashing Kabir, with whom Lata falls in love? The ambitious businessman whom Lata's mother favors? Or the sophisticated poet her relatives choose? The interwoven stories of four families linked by marriage form the background for this marital quest. It proves slow-moving at first, but the patient reader will inevitably be caught up in the compelling rhythms of a richly complex tale. The setting--India in the 1950s--is vividly realized: the enormity of the subcontinent, its overpowering heat, lush gardens, colorful festivals, and exotic foods. Memorable characters abound; not since Dickens has there been such a lively and idiosyncratic cast crowded into one novel. Drama is provided by the simmering conflict between Hindu and Muslim, which breaks out unexpectedly throughout the novel. This is old-fashioned storytelling at its best; highly recommended. BOMC and Quality Paperback alternates; previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 1/93.

From Kirkus Reviews
Set in newly independent India, Nehru's early 1950's, this adipose saga counterbalances a book of social manners--the marrying off of a well-to-do educated young woman, Lata Mehra--with a historical account (even at the level of transcribed parliamentary debate) of the subcontinent trying to find its societal bearings vis-…-vis language, religion, and the redistribution of estate-lands taken off the hands of the elite. Set mainly in Brahmpur, the story encompasses four well-off families, with a focus mostly on the younger members--poets, academics, playboys, newlyweds--who stitch a pattern of peccadillo through their elders' expectations. Meanwhile, Seth, whose California novel in verse, The Golden Gate (1986), was clever and energetic in concept but dull and soapy in final effect, falls into the same trap here: lots of stuff obviously--at a marathon 1300-plus pages--but characters made out of clich‚, with background-India the very stuffed pillow of local color that keeps them standing. The book, too, fairly squeaks with its own pleasure in itself, larded with poetry and a general recommendation of art over politics and money: the characters it spends the most time over are narcissists. Anyone wanting to read how a marriageable daughter can X-ray a whole society ought to let this cream-puff-wrapped-in-a-cinder-block pass and return to Tanizaki's classic Japanese masterpiece, The Makioka Sisters. Fat (the publishing world's delayed reparation for Rushdie's Satanic Verses?) but fatuous. By Guy in Brooklyn
This is a long book (1500 pages), and I approached it thinking I would put it down after 100 pages or so. But to my surprise I was plunged into the world of these four families and I carried this VERY heavy book with me everywhere (including to China). Others have compared the book to Dickens, but I kept thinking of Jane Austen (who is mentioned at one point in the novel). As in Austen, the business of getting married is central to the book, and the juxtaposition of being suitable in terms of money, class, and romance is central. But A Suitable Boy is also like Austen in the sharp-eyed social satire that appears time and again. Many scenes unfold with wit and surprise. Academics, social climbing and over-sentimental mothers, effete sophisticates who have little notion of how they would get on in the world without family money yet are quick to criticize those who make their way on their own, grasping, selfish, shallow young wives -- all come under Vikram Seth's microscope. I loved this book. My wife looked at me dubiously as I brought it with me everywhere and declared she would not read such a long tome, then found that she too was carrying it everywhere because she wanted to read more and more about these fascinating families. Read it!

A richly rewarding read
By vodkasauce
I absolutely cannot say enough about this book. If first read it about five years ago, and, as I'm sure you will be, I approached it as a little bit of a challenge. As many people have commented, this book is so long its almost hard to hold, but as I got to the last few hundred pages, I kept wishing that there would be more and more and more. I never wanted to stop reading it. I read a lot of novels in a year, but very few have stuck with me the way this one has. Just say the words "A Suitable Boy" and I am transported back into the lives of the main characters, and I still get emotional over the choice the Lata makes.

Many reviewers have also commented about how this is a sprawling family drama, which almost doesn't do justice to the way you, the reader, infiltrate these characters' lives, and that you learn an awful lot about Indian history. That is very true, and in fact, I think I know more about 1950's India, and Indian history in general, from reading this book than I do from a class I took in college on the subject, but A Suitable Boy isn't a history book. Seth doesn't wonder away from the story for a not-so-brief lecture on the history of land rights in India, he weaves these social and political concerns so effortlessly into the backdrop of this story that you're almost surprised in the end by how much you've learned.

So if you're on the fence, not really sure if it's too long, or too dense, or if you're not a history or Indian culture buff, stop worrying. This book has something for absolutely everyone, and will make you love each and every one of the characters. From the moment Lata's mother declares she intends to find a husband for her daughter, to the very last page, you will be completely enthralled by this world.

Loved this, loved this, loved this!!!!
By Margaret Karmazin
It took me months to read it because I have the probably odd habit of reading different books at the same time in different places in the house. This was my read-while-eating-if-eating-by-myself tome. Like in a Russian novel, at first it is hard to keep track of who all the characters were and thank heavens the author included a family tree at the beginning for the reader to consult, which I had to do at first. After a while, I knew who everyone was. As good authors do, he gave everyone equal importance (I notice this about TV series that I especially enjoy too, like Mad Men) so that the prolific letter writing of Lata's mother gets the same serious (with some dry humor tossed in) attention as the struggles and antics of high ranking politicians in 1950s India. Pretty much every character was lovable in his/her own way (with some exceptions) and you end up rooting for them all, even if their interests clash. A masterpiece, Mr. Seth! Please write another one for me!

True Places Never Are: Short Stories, by Cate McGowan

Cate McGowan's debut collection, True Places Never Are, winner of the 2014 Moon City Short Fiction Award, introduces us to an assortment of unforgettable characters voyaging through loss and salvation. The book's title borrows from Moby Dick: "It is not down in any map; true places never are." The characters that populate McGowan's stories are indeed off the chart, venturing into wondrous worlds as knotty and distressing as the locales they aim to leave.
Blue, with his frenetic need to paint, longs for what could be a mermaid with narcolepsy. Tara and David, floating between childhood and adulthood, intertwine languidly on the cusp of . . . something. Violet Gray Witherspoon, a name of nouns, spills yearning verbs onto secret pages. Jebediah dances with sacrifice, then freedom. Superheroes emerge in unlikely places. Rats expose themselves in the prison yard. A crop of immigrant birds wings its way across a new homeland.
McGowan's stories will pull you into the picture, close enough to taste the paint fresh upon the canvas. This book will take you to places you never dreamed you'd visit and aren't quite sure you want to stay, but you won't regret the journey. Fasten your seat belt for a memorable ride.

Review
As I read these remarkable stories, I fell headlong for Cate McGowan's tender, fierce, and deliciously complicated characters. Gritty and gorgeous, True Places Never Are is an astonishing collection and McGowan is a one-of-a-kind talent.--Laura van den Berg, author of Find Me and The Isle of Youth
These are stories of powerful resonance, exploring the human condition in all its beauty and ugliness and everything in between. True Places Never Are introduces us to a major new voice in American fiction.--Silas House, author of Clay's Quilt, A Parchment of Leaves, and Eli the Good

Oh, the Places You'll Go.
By Pooch Professor
Cate McGowan’s characters sleep with me.

Blue, with his frenetic need to paint, longs for what could be a mermaid with narcolepsy.

Tara and David, floating between childhood and adulthood, entertwine languidly on the cusp of…something.

Violet Gray Witherspoon, a name of nouns, spills yearning verbs onto secret pages.

Jebediah dances with sacrifice, then freedom. Superheroes emerge in unlikely places. Rats expose themselves in the prison yard. A crop of immigrant birds wend their unlikely way in country.

Cate McGowan’s characters inhabit my dreams. They have taken up residence in my REM sleep, but, unlike some vague dreams you cannot recall in the morning, they are indelible.

McGowan’s prose is florid and full, yet keenly concise. It pulls you into the picture, and from inside, you can taste the paint upon the canvas.

As I drive past rows of vegetables in fields during my travels, I shall never look at farm equipment the same way again.

Enjoy this book in one sitting, as I did, or let it stretch out limpidly over a few days or weeks. But most definitely devour it. You won’t be sorry.

Tales of Exotic Travel
By james thomas
This collection of stories lives up to its title, in that they take us deftly to true places we have never been, places that we get to know through cunning observation and beautiful prose. With Cate McGowan as our gracious and expert guide, showing us just what to look for, we come away enlightened and delighted for having made the journey through time to these places that feel both happily, and sometimes painfully, familiar. This book is armchair travel at its very very best.

You must read this
By John King
Cate McGowan’s short story collection, True Places Never Are, is an exquisite debut full of impressionistic glory and psychological insight. What seems like a virtuoso series of pastoral narratives modulates into stories about art, and the life of the city. This companionable book contains unforgettable surprises, and has an unusual quality for a story collection: it’s a page-turner.

Review
"What this phenomenal book has, that many martial arts books don't have, is constant reminders to 'avoid these mistakes.' This is one of the many reasons that so many martial artists have found value in this work. Throughout the entire book, they consistently highlight shortcomings to avoid, essentially bringing a qualified instructor right into your home. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to any serious martial artist and to those who are just curious about karate. Its price is quite nominal, making it more than an affordable addition to your library, but also as a means of measuring ones betterment." — KarateForums.com

May be the best karate book ever written
By A Customer
This is the most complete instructional karate book I've ever seen. It came out in 1960 and has still not been improved on. The authors were disciples of Gichin Funakoshi, the founder of modern karate. There is very clear step by step and pictorial instruction on how to do all the moves of traditional shotokan karate, the original style out of which all the others grew. If you are attending a karate class now you will recognize your techniques in this book. The styles haven't changed that much in 40 years. There are probably more moves in this book than in your class.
The book has 22 chapters. Some of the chapter titles are: striking points and vital points, stance, hand techniques, foot techniques, sparring, and throwing techniques. There are 40 pages of self defense moves.

Fundamental Shotokan Karate
By A Customer
Karate: the Art of "Empty Hand" Fighting by Hidetaka Nishiyama and Richard C. Brown is the perfect starter book for any one wishing to learn Shotokan Karate. It describes all the stances, punches, strikes, blocks, and kicks. An explanation of the application of Karate techniques in self-defense situations is given. Briefly outlined is the history and principles of the art but what is indispensable in the book are the recommended schedules for the different training situations which make this book a perfect guide for the student and helpful manual for the instructor. After learning what is in this book I would suggest moving on to one of the books by Robin L. Rielly; either Complete Shotokan Karate, ISBN 0-8048-2108-9, or The Secrets of Shotokan Karate, ISBN 0-8048-3229-3. My only wish is that the chapters on Kumite and Kata would be expanded but that is why I recommend the two books above as well.

Early work but still great
By magellan
Considering this book came out originally in 1960 and was the first large-format book on Karate I had seen up to that point, it is remarkable that it has rarely been exceeded in all the time since. The photos of the basic techniques are very clear. The applications sections are generous with good coverage of sparring and self-defense. Nishiyama was in his prime here and you can see the power and intensity in his techniques.

I have a personal story about Nishiyama, although I didn't study with him myself, but one of own karate students did, and he told me this story. Nishiyama was in Los Angeles for some time back in the 60's and he was conducting a training session. One of the students, a guy by the name of Ray Dalke, who later led the U.C. Riverside Shotokan club to several national championship titles, was in the class. I met Dalke when I was a doctoral student at UCR back in the early 80's, but I actually heard this my student. Ray had never been very loose in the legs, especially the groin stretch, where you sit on the ground in a quasi-lotus position and bounce your knees up and down and try to get them all the way to the ground.

Anyway, Nishiyama came around to Dalke, and noticed his problem. He says to Dalke, "You want to have loose lap?" (Sometimes Nishiyama's English was a bit rough, but the meaning came through loud and clear). Dalke says, "yes, Master, I do." Nishiyama says again, "Are you sure you want to have loose lap?" Dalke says, "Yes, yes, Master, I want it more than anything!" At that moment Nishiyama jumps up into the air and comes down with both feet planted squarely on Dalke's knees, driving them all the way to the floor.

Well, he said Dalke's scream of agony could be heard for two city blocks. They had to get an ambulance and take Dalke away. But he survived and was back later after he healed with the "loosest lap" you've ever seen. I hope Ray doesn't mind my telling his story. Like I said, I met Ray in about 1980 when he was the faculty karate instructor at UC Riverside and he was really a pretty cool guy, as well as an excellent instructor. He loved the Shotokan katas and I recall having an enjoyable discussion with him about some of the more advanced forms.

Anyway, Nishiyama is one of the greats of the Shotokan style and this book is still one of the finest books on the subject. I will say one more thing about Nishiyama, which is that he has the most vicious-looking front kick I've ever seen. I've tried to emulate his style on this one but he's basically got the patent on it. Overall, still a great classic on the subject of karate that has rarely if ever been exceeded.

Good info but...
By S. Conroy
The author takes a somewhat casual approach. At first, it was a bit off-setting as I was expecting a more "professional" presentation of the material. Still, I got used to it and was able to get some good information from the book. There are A LOT of questions presented and many of them are very similar to others. Perhaps it should have been more like 50 questions to ask. He does sum it up at the end with the best 20 questions. After reading through the whole book, I think just those last 20 at the end of the book would have been sufficient. One other "complaint:" I am in the medical field and felt the book was aimed more at business jobs particularly sales jobs. A lot of the questions do not apply for medical position interviews.

Excellent Book! A MUST for anyone seeking questions to ask in an interview!
By Vivica Shade
This was an excellent book, with a lot of great questions to ask in an interview. I purchased this a week before an interview for a position at my current company and just skimmed through the book the night before the interview and wrote down 20 questions. In my interview, the interviewer asked me 20 of his own questions and when it came time for me to ask questions, I asked my 20 questions. :)

Although I didn't get the position I had initially interviewed for due to lack of experience, the interviewer was so impressed with me asking as many questions as I did, he wanted me on his team to replace the person who had been offered the other position. When he posted the other position, I had to interview for it (I was the only person who applied) and asked some of the same questions again, but not as many and more geared towards the new position. Needless to say, I've been offered the job and we are working on the hours I will work.

I haven't tried these questions on any external positions, but they worked great for internal positions, so I'm confident that if I were applying for positions outside the company, these questions would be very good to ask.

A "Must Read!" for Job Seekers
By stillclickin'
I thought I was ready to begin interviewing, then I picked up this book and its companion "101 Great Answers to the Toughest Interview Questions". I realized that I still had a lot of work to do before crossing a prospective employer's threshold. This book not only tells you what you need to do before the interview, it gives you the tools and worksheets with which to properly prepare. I was once a manager who conducted interviews for positions within my department. I was not a trained interviewer. I saw my interviewing style described in this book, and it was not flattering. At the time I thought I was a good interviewer. My employees were good employees and often advanced within the company, so I must have done something right. In reading this book I realized I was the "gut feeling plus skills" employer. If you are a job seeker you owe it to yourself to read these books long before leaving the house.

A Town Like Alice (Vintage International), by Nevil Shute

Nevil Shute’s most beloved novel, a tale of love and war, follows its enterprising heroine from the Malayan jungle during World War II to the rugged Australian outback.

Jean Paget, a young Englishwoman living in Malaya, is captured by the invading Japanese and forced on a brutal seven-month death march with dozens of other women and children. A few years after the war, Jean is back in England, the nightmare behind her. However, an unexpected inheritance inspires her to return to Malaya to give something back to the villagers who saved her life. But it turns out that they have a gift for her as well: the news that the young Australian soldier, Joe Harmon, who had risked his life to help the women, had miraculously survived. Jean’s search for Joe leads her to a desolate Australian outpost called Willstown, where she finds a challenge that will draw on all the resourcefulness and spirit that carried her through her war-time ordeals.

A TOWN LIKE ALICE tells of a young woman who miraculously survived a Japanese "death march" in World War II, and of an Australian soldier, also a prisoner of war, who offered to help her--even at the cost of his life....

About the Author

In 1931 he married Frances Mary Heaton and they had two daughters. During the Second World War he joined the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve where he worked on developing secret weapons. After the war he continued to write and settled in Australia where he lived until his death in 1960. Wonderful book which works on many levels
By Gary M. Greenbaum
Too few of Nevil Shute's books are in print in this country--fortunately, this is one of the better one.
When an old Scottish man dies, London solicitor Noel Strachan learns that his sole heir is a young woman named Jean Paget. Strachan acts as her trustee, dispensing money as needed under the will, but the old lawyer soon finds himself falling for the young lady. Before Strachan has done more than shown her London's culture, Paget is off to Malaya to repay the village where she stayed during WWII by digging a well. She convinces Strachan to release the money by telling the story (based on real life) of how she and other women were held prisoner by the Japanese, but eventually found refuge in a small village. Before they go there, they encounter a young Australian, Joe Harmon, who is crucified for stealing food for them. When Paget returns to Malaya, she learns that Harmon survived and returned to Australia. Meanwhile, Harmon has gone to England to seek her, having thought she was married when they met in Malaya. They eventually meet up in Australia (Strachan, out of his own love for Jean, has gently attempted to frustrate the meeting). Jean, determined to make her home in Harmon's home area, sets out to make the godforsaken town into "A Town Like Alice"--a modern town like Alice Springs.
It is a fascinating story. But overlooked in every review I read is the role of the old solicitor, Noel Strachan, who finds himself in love with Jean some decades too late, and is unable to serve as a rival to Joe Harmon. He soon surrenders his unexpressed (even to himself) love out of regard for Jean's interest. His unrequited love, lends a poignant note to the book.
There are no villains. Even the dark characters, like the Japanese who crucified Harmon, are seen as human beings doing the best they can. The fact that the acts they do can be terrible do not alter the fact that they are human beings, and they are painted as such.
Harmon and the other Australian characters are not painted as well as the other characters; perhaps Shute, who had only recently emigrated to Australia, was afraid of erring in characterizations.
Still, a fine book that made a great miniseries.

One of the best books I have ever read!
By A Customer
I am a reader; I devour books. A Town Like Alice is one of my very favorites. I come back to it time and again, whenever I need to lose myself in the heat of Malaysia or the dust of Australia. This book is so well written that I can feel the stones in the road as Jean marches along with the other women in their "Death March". I can feel the despair she feels when she believes Joe to be dead and her intense joy when she discovers that he is still alive. The story is timeless. My mother-in-law,who was a bride during World War II, first introduced me to this book saying that it was her all time favorite, and even though I came of age in the 70's, the book speaks to me as well. Its message of love's survival in the face of desperate odds gives us all a sense of hope.

A timeless classic of love and adventure.
By D. Muhr
When asked what is my favorite book I always respond that I have two. The first is "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee, and the second is "A Town Like Alice" by Nevil Shute. I've recommended it to many people over the years and I haven't found one person yet that could put it down. It's a true classic, one that I've enjoyed over and over. Shute's better known "On The Beach" is as good as "A Town Like Alice" but it is much darker in content. "Alice" is a sweet love story that spans time and distance. If you haven't read it yet do yourself a favor, pick it up, sit down in a comfy chair and enjoy.
