This book is an excellent resource for those who wish to stay ahead of the curve on academic information. Biotech and nanobiotech papers are frequently unpublished in English for a while after Japanese publication, and this book (along with supplementary books of the same series) gives you the tools and directions necessary to grasp desired information within several weeks of learning. I also appreciated the list of recommended additional literature for learning Japanese and technical translation that this book provides in the early chapters.

This is a marvelous book: in a few weeks you will be able of reading and writing phrases like: "zinc and chlorhidric acid mix to produce hydrogen and heat". Very clear, well constructed with a lot of examples and exercises. It does not need a dictionary or else it is totally self contained.

Long lasting pleasure

Great book for Siena art. 22 artists represented. 100 big color pages in a 400 page book. 74 pages on Giovanni di Paolo alone. 30 pages on Sassetta. 22 different artists plus. Many of these artists do not have monographs available. If there is a book dedicated to their work, is is often very expensive. This volume makes a wealth of material available - all in one place. The color is saturated, printed in Italy in 1988. The writing is not difficult but it may be more than you want to know - that is not a bad thing. There is a love and dedication to this period that comes through. Paid $9.40 for this long lasting pleasure.

Amazingly Good Book!

The lady that wrote this is an RN that has helped countless women deliver babies. She has since become a dog breeder and has now helped save lots of puppies. She not only tells you what equipment you need but will actually sell it to you herself for what I think is a pretty fair price. She even gives you her e-mail address so you can send her questions through her e-mail. This book comes with a DVD that brings to life what she teaches you how to do in the book. All in all this is the only book that has ever made me feel like I will know what to do when I have a crisis with newborn puppies. In the book this lady says you can reduce your mortality rate by 20%! That's a lot! She says the average amount of puppies that die in infancy is 30% and that you can get it down to 10%. This book is so inexpensive that I think you can't afford to NOT buy it.

I bought this final volume for respect to Kishimoto. I thoroughly enjoyed the series- when I was not trying to reason with anime logic- and found myself many years later staring at the end of the series. Reading through this volume was the final breath of relief knowing how the character development went. Albeit, I have my own strong opinion as to how certain chapters of the plot should have went, but nonetheless, I am content. I highly encourage reading the epilogue, watching The Last and Boruto the Movie.

The End: 15 Years Later

The final volume to an amazing series!! The final battle between Naruto, and Sasuke is an epic battle with both of them fighting their hardest for what they believe in. One that will go down as a top fight in the series. The conclusion is great. I recommend reading the epilogue series after this.

A study of human belief systems

I too will refer to the 1970 edition of the encyclopaedia set (I was lucky to be able to purchase the set recently are a relatively low price) as I have yet to see later editions. I was fortunate to have come across this set in my local library as a youth and recently purchased a set of my own after an exhaustive search. Unlike so many childhood memories who's colours fade with age and experience, the joy I have when I read from this set is as vibrant as it was in my youth, though now I can also appreciate Man, Myth and Magic from a more intellectual vantage.

Man, Myth and Magic explores the realms of religion, spirituality, psychology and the occult. Articles within the 24 volume set range from the obscure (Wandering Bishops and various manifestations of witchcraft hysterias) to the very well known (articles on major world religions). The authors tend to be experts in their respective fields of research and are, by and large, objective in the treatment of their subjects. There are, however, some writers who have a vested interest what they write about - the article on Druidism contains two articles, one written by an historian which focuses on the known history of druids through contemporary writers (such as Julius Caesar) and archaeology, the other written by a "modern" druid who speaks of the modern incarnation of druidism. In most cases this is appropriate and as the credulous is contrasted with the objective skeptic I'm okay with this treatment. Unfortunately in a few cases there is no counterbalance. For example, in the section entitled "The Frontiers of Belief" is an article written about H.P. Lovecraft. The author surmises that Lovecraft's short stories and poems must have been inspired by real, other worldly creatures, a claim that Lovecraft himself would scoff at. Still, despite rare instances of overly credulous authors, Man, Myth and Magic tends towards the objective examination of man kind's belief systems, be they mystical or based on science.

If you manage to find the complete set, no small feat I might add, you would do well to pick this set up.

Comprehensive and Profusely Illustrated

I own the 1970, 24 volume, set. I haven't seen the revised editions, but I'm sure they can only make a good set better. Although this set is comprehensive in that it covers a wide range of subjects, it is not exhaustive and is not intended to be. Only key elements or highlights of each subject are presented and a bibliography is provided for those who want to research deeper. This set is probably the definitive introduction to the field of the supernatural and related subjects and it is profusely illustrated with artwork, photographs, diagrams and charts. Some of the pictures are graphic and some contain gore and nudity, so I recommend this set only for mature readers. - Brad Clark

It's great set of books, with about every strange thing you could want to read about. It's interesting, and it doesn't push it's words on you. It leaves room for you to decide how you feel about it. I really love the palmistry section. I would (and do) recommend it to anyone interested in man, myth, and magic.

About the Author
Rachel Basch is the author of two previous novels: The Passion of Reverend Nash (named one of the five best novels of 2003 by The Christian Science Monitor) and Degrees of Love. Basch has reviewed books for The Washington Post Book World, and her nonfiction has appeared in n+1, Parenting, and The Huffington Post. Basch was a 2011 MacDowell Colony Fellow. She received the William Van Wert Memorial Fiction Award for an excerpt from The Listener. She currently teaches in Fairfield University’s MFA Program and in the Graduate Liberal Studies Program at Wesleyan University. She lives in Connecticut.

Learning to Listen

From the moment you read the first page of Rachel Basch's intriguing book, you will not be able to put it down. The story describes the struggles of a teenager with problems at once typical and unusual and the struggles of the teenager's therapist to help both the young patient and himself. While the teenager is dealing with problems adjusting to the first year of college and questions of identity more generally, the therapist faces the challenges of reconciling with his daughters and finding new love after his marriage has ended, a quest which cannot be fulfilled until he reveals some secrets of his own to his family.

Through their journey together, both "the listener" and his patient learn to reach out to their families, their community, and the world in general with compassion and love. As a reader, you will experience a similar journey, guided by a novelist who is a master of storytelling, painting compelling characters, and providing deep understanding of the human heart. Rachel Basch captures the perspectives of men, women, parents, and children with compassion and realism. You will long remember the characters and suspenseful plot of this novel.

A beautiful novel

I was hooked from the very beginning of Rachel Basch’s beautiful new novel. The book revolves around Noah – alternately known as Leah – who is struggling to come to terms with his sexual identity, and his college psychologist, Malcolm, a widower and sometimes bewildered father of two adult daughters, who is trying to find his footing in middle age. Noah seeks acceptance – from his peers, from his mother, and from Malcolm – but, ultimately, what he really needs is to accept himself. Malcolm, meanwhile, is navigating complex relationships in his own life – with his daughters, a new lover, and a philandering friend and his wife. As Malcolm tries to help Noah find his “true self,” their lives become entangled in unexpected ways.

Basch deftly gets to the emotional center of her characters and explores the bonds between friends, lovers, parents and their children, and therapists and their patients with great insight. Tension builds through the novel as secrets are revealed and truths gradually uncovered. I became so emotionally invested in her characters and in the connections they made with one another that I found it hard to put the book down!

A fine read

Rachel Basch writes with such heart. Malcolm Dowd, the main character, is a man who elicits great sympathy as he tries to manage his counseling practice, his relationships with two adult daughters, and his own desires after the death -- some years ago -- of his wife. His sensitivity to the painful coming-of-age issues of his trans-gender patient, Noah, is so believable and beautifully rendered. A fine read.
