Almost Like Being at the Premiere

Thomas Kelly's FIRST NIGHTS AT THE OPERA is bound to be loved by opera aficionados as well as people just beginning to be fascinated with a musical form that is both intricate and beautiful. Kelly selects five operas: Handel's Gulio Cesare, Mozart's DON GIOVANNI, Mayerbeer's LES HUGUENOTS, Wagner's DAS RHEINGOLD, and Verdi's OTELLO, and brings the readers to their premieres. Kelly gives us information about each composer, the story of the works themselves, a history of how each work was composed and the difficulties surrounding each production, the effect that each work had on the musical world of its day and how the work is still relevant today. We also get a good deal of information of the performance itself, those who sang the principal roles, the conductors, impresarios, and anyone else involved in the production. Much of Kelly's information is not unique to his book, though his presentation is original and his inclusion of interesting graphics and a number of relevant historical documents regarding each work make this work an invaluable resource. His writing style makes the subject approachable, something not all authors who attempt to write about opera can claim.

As I read the book, I began to long for December and the beginning of live opera broadcasts from the stage of the Met. The in depth analysis of each work presented in a user friendly format made reminded me of the intermission features which are presented during the radio broadcasts from New York's Metropolitan Opera House. These broadcasts introduced me to the world of opera and Kelly's book reminds me why I love this form of music so much.

If you love opera, you owe it to yourself to add this book to your collection. If someone you love enjoys opera, this book will be the perfect gift that will be enjoyed for years to come.

This is a simply marvelous book: well written, interesting, and informative. Prof. Kelly is that rara avis, an academic who can write. I highly recommend this book to the operatic newcomer and professional alike.

Great book on meningioma surgery. Although under the name of Al-Mefty's meningiomas, the chapters include nice references to the role of radiotherapy! ;)
With good illustration and description of techniques, this book covers almost every aspect of meningioma treatment. A good choice!

One of my favorite books and one of my favorite professors

I first encountered this book when taking a class about death and dying at San Jose State University taught by Dr. Kramer. The book and the class truly changed my life in that simply by exposing me to the wide variety of death philosophies, they allowed me to contemplate and challenge the religious ideas and views of death that I had blindly followed my whole life. An excellent resource for anyone studying religion or seeking a new dimension to their personal spirituality.

A good start, but...

I'm really quite torn when it comes to making a judgment about this book because I feel that anything critical I have to say about it needs to be highly qualified in reference to this book's strengths. I had better start with the strengths then.

This is the premier, affordable, death and dying textbook. To the best of my knowledge you will not be able to find a survey of world religion's views of death and dying for under $15. This is really an accomplishment that deserves no small amount of credit and one that you have to acknowledge. If you are looking for a good place to start on this topic, here it is.

However, I have some concerns with this book that need to be mentioned. The first issue is that at times it is exceedingly evident that the author is no, by far, an expert in every religious sub-discipline. Honestly, it would be a monumental accomplishment to pull off that degree of authenticity in a single-author survey of any sort, especially when covering a field as diverse as "religion." Nonetheless, the author doesn't deliver in a few chapters, such as the Judaism and Greek chapters. To further explain, such chapters do not appear to be very well organized. This is both in the sense of organization and assembling material. For example, the organization leaves much to be desired in the Hinduism chapter. In my opinion, some core philosophy, which is brought up later on, needs to be moved to the front to better frame the elucidation of death. I feel that more immediate personal and social issues are addressed with the philosophy pushed to the periphery, but due to Hinduism's nature, I do not think this is a very good approach. Concerning the assembly of material, some chapters seem loosely tacked together, such as the Judaism chapter. It is as if the author found four or five references to death and dying and made them the key points of the chapter. But, seemingly little care is spent explaining how the ideas link up with each other. At times, the cracks between the pieces are glaring. But again, in this case, I must give the author credit as Judaism has a VERY ill-defined view on death, so any attempt at breadth will ultimately appear eclectic. In both cases, it is made quite evident that the author is far from an expert in all fields of religion, which tends to make this book appear a little superficial and may frustrate the reader.

The only other book I would consider on this topic is Bregman's anthology, "Death and Dying in World Religions," but its weaknesses are Kramer's strength. For example, as the Bregman book is an anthology, its tones, perspectives and writing styles vary quite a bit whereas Kramer is very consistent. Also, some authors in the Bregman book make assumptions about the reader's degree of exposure to the religion at hand, whereas Kramer is rather thorough with filling in of background information.

One last complaint of mine is the use of pictures in Kramer. They seem quite out of place and oftentimes either garish or childish. Two that stick out for me are full page smiling Buddha and Abraham with Isaac. Why these were chosen or found appropriate for a textbook is beyond me.

I hope that I have presented my concerns clearly enough and also demonstrated my respect for Kramer to a sufficient degree. This book, without question, is a good (if not the best) place to start if you are curious about how various religions address death, but you may want to look at an additional source (Bregman?) for more balance and continuity.

An excellent overview of the matter

Kramer gives us an excellent and well-researched view of how some of the world's main religions view death. I was impressed with the integrity and fair evaluation of each faith. There is no apparent leaning to one belief system or another. And Kramer effectively hits the main areas of the belief systems concerning prayer as well.

It might be good to see more indigenous representations (i.e., African). Kramer talks about Hindi, Buddhist, Zen, Tibetan, Chinese, Mesopotamian and Egyptian, Greek, Hebraic, Christian, Islamic, and American Indian views. A very useful reference for beginning studies of religion, death, anthropology, and other such disciplines.

OK if you know nothing about the field

I was really taken in by this nice cover i'm embarassed to say.
It is a few chapters of a thesis (cheap typesetting)that doesn't really go into depth and I feel like I could have got just as much free on the internet.
If they do a next edition perhaps it could be worth it.

Starting with the authors' personal stories and moving through analysis of the human condition as a whole, this book is packed with inspiration and advice on how to move forward in relationships with others, in life and in work. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in self improvement - it is down to earth, non-pretentious and very, very readable.

The idea behind the book is that we start as a whole, part of One (or God, or the Universe) and our human experience is that we are fragmented, but it is now time for Integration, slowly moving back towards wholeness.

Integration will help you find the words to describe and think about what it means to be part of humanity and part of the universe.

Ms. Betz masterfully brings together ancient and complex,current wisdom in a very understandable way. The book is very elegantly written and straightforward in its approach. Personal experiences are beautifully used to help define key concepts.
As a person who only buys e-books, I strongly encourage you to buy this in the paper format because you will want to underline passages, make notes in the margins and refer to it on a regular basis. This book will become a treasured companion on your life journey.

Due to this unconventional but commonsense approach, David Goldstein of Littler Mendelson, the largest labor firm in the U.S., was asked to review Performance-based Hiring and provide a general statement of validity. Here's his summary:
  
"Because the Performance-based Hiring system does differ from traditional recruiting and hiring processes, questions arise as to whether employers can adopt Performance-based Hiring and still comply with the complex array of statutes, regulations, and common law principals that regulate the workplace. The answer is yes.
  
In particular: 

• A properly prepared performance profile can identify and document the essential functions of a job better than traditional position descriptions, facilitating the reasonable accommodation of disabilities and making it easier to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act and similar laws. 
• Even employers that maintain more traditional job descriptions may still use performance profiles or summaries of performance profiles to advertise job openings. Employers are not legally required to post their internal job descriptions when advertising an open position. Nor is there any legal obligation to (or advantage in) posting boring ads. 
• Focusing on Year 1 and Beyond criteria may open the door to more minority, military, and disabled candidates who have a less 'traditional' mix of experiences, thereby supporting affirmative action or diversity efforts. 
• Conducting performance-based interviews ensures that the interviews will be structured and properly focused and minimizes the risk of an interviewer inquiring into protected characteristic. Moreover, since the performance-based interviews are conducted pursuant to a common methodology, one is assured that the candidates are being fairly compared. 
• Performance-based interviewing promotes fair consideration of the different skills and experiences that each candidate has to offer--which is essential to promoting diversity."

About the Author

Rolf Behling holds a diploma in physics from the University of Hamburg, Germany. During more than 30 years in the medical industry he has held many positions, including department head of tube technology development, global project coordination manager, global innovation manager, head of marketing and field support for X-ray tubes, department head for X-ray tube development, project manager, and process physicist. The first spiral-groove-bearing X-ray tube was developed under his leadership. He currently heads the Philips Group for Advanced Development of X-ray Tubes and X-ray Generators at Philips HealthTech in Hamburg. He is a part-time lecturer at the University of Hamburg and has written numerous patents and publications in vacuum technology and medical imaging.

I have never seen a book dedicated to x-ray sources ...

I have never seen a book dedicated to x-ray sources. It definitely fills a huge gap in scientific literature. This book is very comprehensive. It covers everything from the history to the deep technical details(Stuff you didn't know but were afraid to ask). The authors insight into future trends seems to be very insightful. I believe this book will be an industry standard for many years to come. If I was a rich man I would buy copies for all my nerdy friends.
