Preface

This book is based on a dialogue with nurses and nursing, descriptive research that identified five levels of competency in clinical nursing practice. These levels — novice, advanced beginner, competent, proficient, and expert — are described in the words of nurses who were interviewed and observed either individually or in small groups. Only patient care situations where the nurse made a positive difference in the patient's outcome are included. These situations offer vivid examples of excellence in actual nursing practice. They are not abstract ideals, however; they emerge from the imperfections and contingencies with which nurses work daily.

A Note to the Skeptics

Some who read the exemplars will be skeptical that such nursing is possible. Their skepticism is warranted, because these examples are drawn from outstanding clinical situations where the nurse learned something about her practice or made a significant contribution to a patient's welfare. But if the reader's skepticism stems from a generalized disillusionment with nursing in hospitals and from the belief that nurses are rendered impotent to give compassionate, lifesaving care in hospitals — then this book offers a resounding rebuttal to the skeptic and a ray of hope to the disillusioned.

The Perceptual Origins of Excellence

This book questions some of nursing's most dearly held beliefs and assumptions. The book asserts that perceptual awareness is central to good nursing judgment and that this begins with vague hunches and global assessments that initially bypass critical analysis; conceptual clarity follows more often than it precedes. Experienced nurses often describe their perceptual abilities using phrases such as "gut feeling," a "sense of uneasiness," or a "feeling that things are not quite right." This kind of talk makes educators and clinicians uncomfortable, because the assessment must move from these perceptual beginnings to conclusive evidence. Expert nurses know that in all cases definitive evaluation of a patient's condition requires more than vague hunches, but through experience they have learned to allow their perceptions to lead to confirming evidence.

In the quest for a scientific rationale, the importance of perceptual skills can be overlooked by any clinician — nurse, physician, or counselor. If nurses were disembodied computers or mechanical monitoring devices, they would have to wait for clear, explicit signals before identifying one singular feature of a problem. Fortunately, however, expert human decision makers can get a gestalt of the situation and proceed to follow up on vague, subtle changes in the patient's condition with a confirmatory search aided by the whole health care team. Experts dare not stop with vague hunches, but neither do they dare to ignore those hunches that could lead to early identification of problems and the search for confirming evidence.

The Importance of Discretionary Judgment

Considering the early history of nursing education in this country, I am concerned that the model of skill acquisition described here could be misinterpreted as advocating informal trial-and-error learning. Therefore, it is important to point out that the Dreyfus Model of Skill Acquisition was originally developed in research designed to study pilots' performance in emergency situations. In that context, no one worried that people might misinterpret the model and suggest that the pilot should just go out and "get the feel of the plane" through trial and error; under those circumstances the beginning pilot would not even survive basic training. The same holds true for nursing. Providing nursing care involves risks for both nurse and patient, and skilled nursing requires well-planned educational programs. Experience-based skill acquisition is safer and quicker when it rests upon a sound educational base.

This book's purpose is to present the limits of formal ales and call attention to the discretionary judgment used actual clinical situations. This does not place the expert a special, privileged position outside the principles of physiology, nursing, and medicine. The book does not advocate a chaotic or anarchical position that would claim there are no rules — that would confer a license, for instance, to ignore the rules of asepsis simply because sterile technique must be sometimes ignored in life-and-death emergencies. Attending to the particular contingencies of a situation does not warrant the inclusion that the general principles governing that station can be generally ignored. My position is not a careless recommendation for the abandonment of rules. Instead, I am claiming that a more skilled, advanced understanding of the situation allows orderly behavior without rigid rule following.

Once the situation is described, the actions taken can understood as orderly, reasonable behavior that demands of a given situation rather than rigid principles and rules. More descriptive rules could be generated to allow for multiple exceptions, but the expert would still function flexibly in other new situations requiring new exceptions. The book addresses the risky, situation-specific decisions that are usually covered up but that nurses face daily in their practice. Menzies (1960) referred to hiding behind rules and policies as a defense against anxiety, a coping strategy. But as a coping strategy it is unrealistic and creates the additional burden of lack of recognition and legitimization of actual nursing performance.

Reflecting the Realities of Practice

Readers would probably prefer that I had chosen only exemplars reflecting ideal collaborative behaviors and ideal relationships with physicians. In fact, nursing administrators and physicians have warned me that they do not like the exemplars showing the doctor-nurse relationship in a bad light. I, too, wish that in conducting this study I had found only enlightened, collaborative relationships between nurses and physicians, but that would have been fiction and not descriptive research — an ideal model instead of an empirically tested one. If there is a bias, it is probably in the other direction: that troubled nurse-physician exchanges are under-represented, given the amount of interview time nurses spent describing troubled interactions.

In the real world, nurses and physicians alike have good and bad days; some are frankly incompetent. When immediate physician attention to a crisis is not available, the nurse fills the gap far more often than is formally acknowledged. We can claim that this is not nursing, but we do so only by ignoring what nurses actually do. Therefore, skilled performance was considered excellent because, even lacking the best of circumstances (e.g., collaborative relationships or formally acknowledged nursing functions), the nurse procured or did what was needed for the patient. By attending to the ideal and presenting only what we hope to become, we would miss much of what is significant about our actual practice. Not knowing who and what we are about now will seriously impede what we want to become.

A Kaleidoscope of Intimacy and Distance

The reader would be correct to question the representativeness of this work. The goal was not to describe a typical day or hour but rather the highlights, the ,growing edges of clinical knowledge. The participants were asked to present clinical situations that stood out in their minds. Nurses make many contacts with patients daily; most of the time they are unaware of the impact their interventions have on the patient's recovery. Many of these contacts and interventions are routine and not even remembered by the nurses. In other words, the nurse-patient relationship is not a uniform professionalized blueprint but rather a kaleidoscope of intimacy and distance in some of the most dramatic, poignant, and mundane moments of life. The mundane moments were not captured because this research strategy asked specifically for outstanding clinical situations. So this bias remains, even though we asked for descriptions of both typical and unusual days. Since we sought to describe skilled performance, deficits were not the point of inquiry, there are no negative examples of deficits identified (see Fenton, pp. 262-74 for an example of identification of deficits).

Not an End but a Beginning

I am concerned about hasty system builders who will want deify the 31 competencies described or who might want p complete the list, as though there were a finite list of competencies that can be captured for all time. Ending with 31 is indeed a bit whimsical, but the intent of this work is to encourage nurses to collect their own exemplars and to pursue the lines of inquiry and research questions raised by their own clinical knowledge. This work presents new ways to view nursing practice so that we do not continue to limit the description of such practice to a simplified, linear, problem-solving process. Such uniformity and constriction limit our understanding of the complexity and significance of our practice. As one nurse said with a note of realization, in a group discussion: "You know, I acted very quickly and saved a baby's life today. That's not insignificant!" It seemed that she had failed to take account of the import of her actions in her earlier analytical reporting.

I am grateful to colleagues who have enriched this work by providing descriptions — an early map, so to speak — of the practical applications of this work (see Epilogue).

Classic model in use world-wide

I'm surprised that there are not more reviews of this classic. From Novice to Expert is now THE model used to describe development in nursing and is the basis for probably 99% of all the clinical ladders in existence. Benner deserves our undying gratitude for finding a way to describe what it is that nurses really DO. Her following books based on this one are also excellent. In the late '80s and '90s she used her model to describe critical care nursing, and is now using her model to describe expert nursing practice in long term care. In graduate school, so many of the models I was required to learn had nothing to do with actual nursing practice--because they were created by PhD nurse educators who had not practiced for years or decades. For her work, Benner went to bedside nurses actually doing nursing, and built her model upon what she discovered there and from them. As a clinical nurse specialist, I use this model everyday when working with other nurses and with patients.

Sensible Nursing Research

Patricia Benner started taking a common-sense approach to nursing research, when everyone else was out there in the clouds. She actually did something no one else was doing at the time- she asked nurses what they thought, and observed real working nurses to describe her learning model. She aptly describes how nurses learn at the bedside, and why they make the decisions they do, based on what stage of learning they're in. I recommend this book for new and experienced nurses, preceptors, and nurse educators. A must-read for anyone in the profession.

Timeless since it was published 25 years ago, Benner's book offers a realistic and thoughtful model of nursing practice which addresses many challenges that are just as pertinent today. The exemplars are classic illustrations of what makes nursing so important yet difficult to define, and most importantly that the differences in nursing practice are placed in the context of experience- which offers nursing leaders important insight into our own strategies. A "must-have"resource for managers and an "I wish I knew these things when I started" textbook for the classroom. Has a permanent place on the night stand.

Annabelle's mother joined in the sessions and even filmed them. Annabelle lived a double life - a schoolgirl by day, a sex slave at night. It might have endured for years had she not fallen pregnant at 17 with Batley's baby. In February 2008 she gave birth to a daughter, Emily, who gave Annabelle hope and a reason to live. Now she knew she had to escape, especially after Batley forced her into prostitution when Emily was three months old. She contacted relatives and found the courage to report Batley, her mother and the other cult members to the police. In 2011 her evidence helped convict 48-year-old Batley for life on 11 charges of rape and numerous other sexual offences.Annabelle's mother was also jailed, along with two others in a case that came to be known as the 'cul-de-sac cult'. Today she lives a happy and settled life with Emily and her partner but the nightmares of her damaged past will haunt her forever.

Astonished and captivating

The minute I tuned into "Nightmare in suburbia - The cul de sac sex cult" - I immediately turned the telly off and download the Amazon book. This shockingly true story had me captivated and horrified from beginning to end and I could not put this book down. With tears streaming down my face my admiration for this young lady ensuring that justice was served, over and above her trauma, has left me happy and angry - an excellent read!

A Most Remarkable Story

This book will bring tears to your eyes for it is one of the most shocking accounts of child abuse ever told by a victim.

Well done to the victim for sharing this real life nightmare that she endured for too many years. Her story is a very disturbing one indeed. It makes one wonder to what extent it could be happening in other places, to other innocent girls.

Her story is about her 'hell on earth childhood' and how she was intentionally manipulated, brainwashed, abused and psychologically tortured from a very young age, growing up within a secret religious sex cult.

Despite her ordeal, however, she managed to find the strength to overcome her evil predicament, survive the trauma and pain, and help see justice done.

Despite all she endured, what is truly inspiring is how she was able to put it all behind her and become a normal caring loving person who finally found happiness and a positive attitude to life.

A must read book!

An Unreal Reading experience

Written in the perfect style for this kind of story. It takes you away to the memories of Annabelle Foster. Its unbelievable she went through so much and still found the strength and courage to keep going and start a new life. I admire her and I hope she bringing hope to people who have been or are in a similar situation.

Interesting concept but it was just ok

I really enjoyed the beginning of the book. I couldn't put it down. As it approached the middle and the end I kept reading but just to get through it. I was hoping for some great ending with some big twist I couldn't predict but I unfortunately was disappointed. I would go into more detail but I do not want to give anything away. I think the idea has promise but in the end it was too difficult to put on paper and the ending was forced.

A satisfying SF thriller but not much more

I jumped into the bandwagon with this one, which is not what I usually do. Although I do not regret it, it wasn’t the groundbreaking experience that others felt.

Dark Matter is an easy, fast paced SF thriller, perfect for a weekend at the beach. This was ideal for me as there was where I read it.

Jason is a former scientist, current university professor who is married with a former artist, current art teacher with who he shares a child. They have a happy marriage although they both sacrificed their career for family. The action starts right away with the kidnapping of Jason by a masked individual who takes him to an abandoned facility, drugs him and leaves him unconscious. Jason wakes up in a lab, confused, without any memory of getting there. He realizes he somehow arrived in a different universe and does all he can to turn back home to his beloved wife.

For me, the highlight of this novel was the writing. Short paragraphs, sometimes phrases, sometimes only words. Using this device, the author succeeded to create throughout the book an atmosphere of tension and expectation. I had to turn the page to see what happens next.

The book proposes some interesting philosophical questions which I wished had been explored deeper. What is happiness? Are we really happy? If we took other decisions in life, would those make us happier or made us worse?

The science behind the story was almost nonexistent and that was a problem for me. The theory of multiverse is not new and I wished the author made use of this theme for other reasons than a plot igniter. I do not need a science treaty but I wish the author went a bit more in detail about the science of the multiverses. Moreover, there were some aspects that did not make sense for me.

Another shortcoming was the secondary characters. Amanda, for example, was there only for one purpose and after that function was fulfilled she became a burden to the extent that the author had to find a way to get rid of her.

All in all, it was a satisfying thriller that kept me at the edge of the seat (or sunbed) but nothing more.

Blake Crouch's best book to date

Dark Matter is the thriller you are not going to want to put down, and in fact, may not be able to. Blake Crouch has written good books before, but Dark Matter is his best, most complete, and most satisfying novel to date.

Dark Matter is the story of Jason Dessen, a university professor with a beautiful wife and son who goes out one night for a drink and wakes up in a different life. Not just a different life, but his own life, minus the wife and kid and instead of a teaching job, the greatest professional success in his field he’d ever imagined. Jason is desperate to return to the life he knew and be reunited with his family.

This book is a scientifically plausible and fascinating thriller with amazing concepts and page-turning action. What really grounds this book, though, are the strong characters and relationships. Jason tries to reconstruct what has happened to him and find a way back to the woman and son he loves. This takes him down a path that is both mind-blowing and thrilling. There are a number of twists and turns in this book, a few of which you might see but most of which will just blow your mind.

Dark Matter explores the choices we make and how these choices are both influenced by who we are and influence who we become. It does this in the context of a story filled with characters you care about and does it at a thriller’s pace. I enjoy a fast paced thriller, which this is, but the character depth is what takes this book to the next level.

Blake Crouch has written his best book to date and one of the best thrillers of the year. He’s displaying all his skills and joins some of the best writers in the field today. Fans of Harlan Coben, Michael Crichton, Joseph Finder and thriller lovers in general will find a lot to like in this book. If you’ve ever wondered about the road not taken, you’re going to want to read this book. Highly recommended!

Anime vs. Manga

As with the previous volumes of manga created post-tv series, I find the manga to be disappointing. The tone is almost one of parody as the characters are exaggerated in affect and action. The subtle nuances of the television series are disposed of in favor of action and fan service. I imagine this was done to sell the manga to a younger,male crowd who may have found the romantic triangle of Saya, Haji and Solomon too mushy for their tastes. If you are a romantic, you will not enjoy the manga although as a Blood Plus fan, you will appreciate the greater detail to backstory and even some of the differences. For example, (spoiler alert), George Miuyagusuku doesn't die in the manga. He sometimes acts like a fool, though. I didn't like that much. The character of Charles aka Karl is also more developed so if you like that character, the manga will please. All in all, manga is manga and anime is anime. They don't always reflect well on each other. I prefer the animated version, as well as the complex story that is slowly developed over time. The less patient and less romantic will probably disagree. And that's what makes a horse race.

Still horrible...

Think Vol. 1 was bad? This one is worse. So not only are we graced with blatant misogyny and piss-poor story telling and awful characterization, but surprise, surprise! Sexual objectification of not only our heroine Saya, but also Julia and the 14 year old UNDERAGED disabled girl Mui. Again, watch the anime or read the Light Novels. Still 46756256346387x better than this waste of paper.

The saga continues

More of Saya's story unfolds as her memory returns from her past. The stakes are higher now as her foster brother, Riku, has been kidnapped and she's determined to find him and get him back to safety. Saya ends up working along with the Red Shield, an organization whose been trying to stop the Chiropterans as well.

This manga has Saya traveling to Vietnam, which is good because the change in scenery drives home how this epidemic is expanding. Saya has a lot more on her plate then you're led to believe in the first volume. The action and violence are still there. There isn't as much Kai as in the first novel, but he isn't really a favorite of mine anyway so I didn't miss him. Nothing is taboo in this series as children are subjected to just as much violence and tragedy.

I'm a big Haji fan, so I enjoy seeing him be Saya's rock. They have an underlying bond with each other that builds throughout the series. Unlike volume 1, this volume somewhat combines several episodes from the anime though, again, there are obvious plot differences.

This volume could be a standalone, but since this series is only 5 volumes, it's worth reading consecutively.

About the Author

Arthur O'Sullivan is a professor of economics at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon. After receiving his B.S. Degree in economics at the University of Oregon, he spent two years in the Peace Corps, working with city planners in the Philippines. He received his Ph.D. degree in economics from Princeton University in 1981 and has taught at the University of California, and Davis and Oregon State University, winning several teaching awards at both schools. He recently accepted an endowed professorship at Lewis and Clark College, where he teaches microeconomics and urban economics. He is the author of the best-selling textbook, Urban Economics, currently in its fifth edition.

Professor O'Sullivan's research explores economic issues concerning urban land use, environmental protection, and public policy. His articles appear in many economics journals, including Journal of Urban Economics, Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, National Tax Journal, Journal of Public Economics, and Journal of Law and Economics.

Professor O'Sullivan lives with his family in Lake Oswego, Oregon. He enjoys outdoor activities, including tennis, rafting, and hiking. Indoors, he plays chess, foosball, and ping-pong with his two kids, and is lucky to win one of five games.

Steven M. Sheffrin is dean of the division of social sciences and professor of economics at the University of California, Davis. He has been a visiting professor at Princeton University, Oxford University, and the London School of Economics, and served as a financial economist with the Office of Tax Analysis of the United States Department of Treasury. He has been on the faculty at Davis since 1976 and served as the chairman of the department of economics. He received his B.A. from Wesleyan University and his Ph.D. in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Professor Sheffrin is the author of eight other books and monographs and over 100 articles in the fields of macroeconomics, public finance, and international economics. His most recent books include Rational Expectations (Second Edition) and Property Taxes and Tax Revolts: The Legacy of Proposition 13 (with Arthur O'Sullivan and Terri Sexton), both from Cambridge University Press.

Professor Sheffrin has taught macroeconomics at all levels, from large lectures of principles (classes of 400) to graduate classes for doctoral students. He is the recipient of the Thomas Mayer Distinguished Teaching Award in economics.

He lives with his wife Anjali (also an economist) and his two children in Davis, California. In addition to a passion for current affairs and travel, he plays a tough game of tennis.

Our Story

When we set out to write an economics text, we were driven by the vision of the sleeping student. A few years ago, one of the authors was in the middle of a fascinating lecture on monopoly pricing when he heard snoring. It wasn't the first time a student had fallen asleep in one of his classes, but this was the loudest snoring he had ever heard—it sounded like a sputtering chain saw. The instructor turned to Bill, who was sitting next to the sleeping student and asked, "Could you wake him up?" Bill looked at the sleeping student and then gazed theatrically around the room at the other students. He finally looked back at the instructor and said, "Well professor, I think you should wake him up. After all, you put him to sleep."

That experience changed the way we taught economics. It highlighted for us a basic truth—for many students, economics isn't exactly exciting. We took this as a challenge—to get first-time economics students to see the relevance of economics to their lives, their careers, and their futures.

In order to get students to see the relevance of economics we knew that we had to engage them. With the first and second editions of Macroeconomics: Principles and Tools, we helped professors to do that by emphasizing an active learning approach. We engaged students by teaching them how to do something—economic analysis. We kept the book brief, lively, and to the point, and used the five key principles of economics as an organizing theme. The result was that the first and second editions were a success in classrooms across the country, and we strove in this edition to do even better.

Key Changes

We knew that our text's brevity and student accessibility were key strengths and we worked to enhance and preserve them in the third edition. We also found that professors and students truly appreciated our concerted effort to use economic principles to explain current and topical events. For the third edition, we made a systematic attempt to refine this feature of the book. We made a special effort to enhance our chapter opening stories, Economic Detective exercises, end Closer Look boxes. The result is a text that applies economic reasoning to the most current economic controversies and debates.

In macroeconomics, we use the tools of growth accounting to assess the growth of productivity in the late 1990s and discuss whether or not we are experiencing a "new economy." We also take a more in-depth look at the problems facing the Japanese economy through the last decade and the role that two extraordinary chairmen of the Federal Reserve played in promoting economic stability. Some of our new features include the elusive link between money and happiness, whether committees make more or less effective economic decisions than individuals, and the role that climate and economic geography play in economic growth. In addition to these new topics, we added more historical material on our experiences with monetary and fiscal policy and how our economic thinking has changed over time.

The September 11, 2001 terrorist attack impacted the economy in many different ways. In this edition, we have updated our discussion of the recent performance of the U.S. economy, the status of the federal budget, and monetary and fiscal policy in light of this event. In particular, we provide an extended discussion of the key role that the Federal Reserve played in calming financial markets directly after the attack, and discuss changes in fiscal policy that occurred as well.

In addition to these changes, we undertook a thorough review of our test bank to ensure accuracy and to provide a more focused range of questions for instructors' use. A totally new test bank was added to the supplement package to give instructors even greater flexibility in creating quizzes and exams. We incorporated the Active Learning aspect of the text into the questions in the supplement package—focusing new questions on asking students to create graphs, rather than just interpreting them. The Active Learning CD-ROM also was enhanced in this fashion through the addition of a Graphing Tool and Tutorial. In addition, we added videos to the CD-ROM so that students could see the economic experiments referred to in the text in action.

Teaching Philosophy

We began with the idea that an introductory economics course should be taught as if it is the last economics class a student will ever take. Because this is true for most students, we have just one opportunity to teach them how to use economics. The best way to teach economics is to focus on a few key concepts and ideas and apply them repeatedly in different circumstances.

We start the book with the five key principles of economics and then apply them throughout the book. This approach provides students with the big picture—the framework of economic reasoning. We make the key concepts unforgettable by using them repeatedly, illustrating them with intriguing examples, and giving students many opportunities to practice what they've learned.

Our book is designed to be accessible to students. We have kept the writing lean, the examples lively and topical, and the visuals exciting.

Principles and Tools

In keeping with the themes of relevance and student accessibility, we have once again organized our text around the five key principles of economics. Throughout the text, every point of theory is tied back to the five key principles and is indicated by the key symbol (see margin).

  • The Principle of Opportunity Cost. The opportunity cost of something is what you sacrifice to get it.
  • The Marginal Principle. Pick the level of an activity at which the marginal benefit equals the marginal cost.
  • The Principle of Diminishing Returns. If we increase one input while holding the other inputs fixed, output will increase, but at a decreasing rate.
  • The Spillover Principle. In some circumstances, decision makers do not bear all the cost or experience all the benefits from their decision.
  • The Reality Principle. What matters to people is the real value of money or income—its purchasing power—not the face value of money or income.
  • We use these principles to explain the logic underpinning the most important tools of economics. By using these five principles repeatedly, we reveal the logic of economic reasoning and demystify the tools of economics. Students see the big picture and also learn how to use the tools of economics properly.

    Our book is based on Active Learning, a teaching approach based on the idea that students learn best by doing. Our book engages students by letting them do activities as they read. We implement Active Learning with the following features:

    • Test Your Understanding questions help students determine whether they understand the preceding material before continuing. These are straightforward questions that ask students to review and synthesize what they have read. Complete answers appear at the end of each chapter.
    • Chapter-Opening Stories open each chapter and motivate the chapter's subject matter.
    • Each chapter starts with a list of practical questions that are answered in the chapter.
    • Lively Examples are integrated throughout the text and help bring economic concepts to life. We have hundreds of fresh, new examples in this edition.

    Book Organization

    Throughout most of the 1990s, the U.S. economy performed very well—low inflation, low unemployment, and rapid economic growth. This robust performance contributed to an increasing interest by economists in understanding the processes of economic growth. Our theories of economic growth address the fundamental question of how long-term living standards are determined and why some countries prosper while others do not. This is the essence of economic growth. As one noted economist says, "Once you start thinking about growth, it is hard to think of anything else."

    Yet, the great economic expansion of the 1990s came to an end in 2001, as the economy started to contract. Difficult economic times remind us that macroeconomics is also concerned with understanding the causes and consequences of economic fluctuations. Why do economies experience recessions and depressions, and what steps can be taken to stabilize the economy? This has been a constant theme of macroeconomics throughout its entire history.

    A key dilemma confronting economics professor has always been how much time to devote to classical topics such as growth and production, versus more Keynesian topics such as economic fluctuations. Our book is designed to let professors choose. It works like this: to pursue a classical approach, professors should initially concentrate on the first four chapters, followed by the first four chapters in the macroeconomics section. To focus on Keynesian themes, start with Chapters 1 through 4, cover the first two chapters in macroeconomics, and then turn to the chapter on aggregate demand and supply.

Students use economic concepts to solve key business decisions, including how to launch the start-up company's initial public offering (IPO), enter new markets for existing products, develop new products, determine prices, attract new employees, and anticipate competition from rivals. The videos illustrate the importance of an economic way of thinking to make real-world business decisions.     Macroeconomics: Principles and Tools

    This easy-to-read, well-structured textbook is an excellent source of information for any economics student. I used this book for Principles of Macroeconomics, an online course I took over the summer. The book is simple yet gives sufficient detail on many topics to not only provide a broad overview, but it is able to go quite in depth. The authors provide the student with a great deal of tools to use and supply many activities, questions and methods to help relate concepts to the real world. This book is written much better than my Advanced Macroeconomics text and is much more student-friendly.

    This book gives a great overview of the study of economics. I used it for an Introduction to Global Economics class in college and found it to be easy to read and understand. The information is extremely up-to-date, and is displayed not only through text, but by charts and graphs as well. There also additional materials (practice test questions, a CD rom, and a guide to researching economics on the internet) which accompany the text which are available as well. Overall, a great book for the study of basic economics!
