John Locke Champion of Empiricism

A book written for high school students must be clear, coherent and interesting in its outline and conclusions. John Locke (1632- 1704) belongs to a trio of British philosophers (the others are Berkeley and Hume) who represent the British empiricist school of thinking. Three points this book failed to emphasize are: (1) that the famous Essay Concerning Human Understanding is a principal statement of empiricism (2) that Locke`s political theory was largely a summary of what was already in practice in England; for example, repudiating the divine right of kings, and (3) that Isaac Newton inspired Locke to attempt to do for philosophy what Newton had done for science.
In addition to the above, this book could have been more colorful by looking closely at Locke`s personal life and by reducing the number of references to other philosophers. The best part of the book is looking at the American Declaration of Independence in terms of Locke`s influence. The book lacks focus, as if the author drifted off the main subject because he didn't know what else to write.
